can one of you tell me how or why someone is considered an illegal imigrant in the states and how they get a green card and what the green card does?

When someone wasn't born in the U.S. (so they obviously migrated into the U.S.) and doesn't have any form of a U.S. citizenship and/or a green card. I forgot how you get a green card (I believe it's from the government when you try to file something to the U.S. for citizenship recognition, but a green card tells you that you are a legal U.S. citizen that has came from another country.
