View Full Version : How to be the best with ryu - Prediction and understanding lag

Well I decided to write a little faq on how to be the best with the only true skilled person in the game, Ryu. First to all people who r gonna bitch: get the #### out of here!!
All right. Now go into training mode pick ryu and psy (or blanka) assist. Psy and blanka assists are the best for ryu. Now practice all of ryu's moves, practice doing them as fast as you can. You want to get fast at this game to be able to keep up with the better people in the game. Now in a real game always do: fp haduken, its the fastest haduken in the game and fastest way to build meter. Start off the game with jumping back and fp haduken. Build meter while hopefully chipping your opponent. Dont constantly superjump since they are limited. ONly SJ when you need to like SJ'ing out of a super. When ever u jump towards your oppenent, always jump in with a rk and fp haduken. You actually can cancel some moves in this game, like: fp haduken, shinku haduken. Those actually cancel into one another, probably cause of the lag but it works. The best way to catch someone with this is to call psy assist, fp kaduken, shinku haduken. Even if it doesnt connect it will chip pretty good. Dont use ryu's super hurricane kick, it isnt worth using in a real game since if it doesnt connect you opponent can punich u with a shinku haduken from the other side of the screen.
In every single game you must predict what the other person will do next. Now being able to do this comes from experience, so go out and play a bunch of people and get a feel for how people play. By experience you should get a good idea of what someone will do next, and go by what you would do next. Why predict what people will do next? Because it gives you the advantage of getting out of a bad situation or punishing someone because of what you know will happen. ex:if some SJ's to the other side of the screen with 1 bar or more of meter, always expect that they will fall down with fp haduken, shinku haduken. If you know that they will do that then SJ to the othe side of the screen as fast as possible or block. Always let them make the mistakes, not you. Have them set their self's up for a beating. another ex: the 2 of you are firing hadukens at each other. Sooner or later the other person is going to Sj to the other side, what does that mean? since u know that their going to Sj to the other side, dash to where they were, jump in the air and do a shinku haduken. And block as much as you can, because blocking fail's a good 50% of the time so block just to be cautious. Never Sj in the way of a shinku haduken and block. Because more then likely blocking will give out and you will fall into the super, so if someone is going to do a super and u r in the way just block. Also SJ'ing fail's a good amount of the time too, you will sometimes just normal jump. So dont cut your Sj too close or you will end up paying for it. That's why u must predict, so you dont have to cut things soo close. Plan ahead!!!!!
And to our best friend lag...... You MUST understand how lag works and how to use it to win. Now when i say use lag to win i dont mean purposly lag the game by having alot of programs open or d/l things. I mean use you knowledge of lag to help you in the game. Now what do i mean by understand lag?? Well why is it then during a game it looks like u hit someone with a super but the person ends up right behind u and no life came off? That is lag and what u must understand. If someone is too close to u and you do a shinku haduken, they will more then likely end up on the other side of the screen and unharmed. So what to do? dash to the other side of the screen and then do a super. Say you and your opponent are on the opposite side of the screen firing hadukens at each other. Now in order to actually know what i'm talking about u have to go and play and try and learn lag on your own. But always remember that 9 times out of 10 the person will be on the other side of the screen, so plan accordingly.
Well in order to be the best like I was with ryu you must constantly play and learn from your games. Do what I did, constantly bug the top ranked ppl for fights. And when their over, analyze what happened and what u could have done better. Savor every fight, and get the most out of each one. And always keep your cool, dont get nervous no matter who you play. There were times when I played TarkanX and Nferno666 and shook soo much cause of how nervous i was, so just keep your cool. Until next time,

Lol, my version of what he said...
Well, I decided to write a little faq on how to be the best with the only true skilled person in the game, Ryu. First, to all people who are going to bitch: Get the #### out of here!!
All right. Now go into training mode, pick Ryu and Psylocke (or Blanka) for your helper. Psylocke's and Blanka's assists are the best for Ryu. Now practice doing Ryu's moves as fast as you can. You want to get fast at this game to be able to keep up with the better people in the game. Now in a real fight when you do a Hadoken, always use FP. It's the fastest one Ryu has, and is the quickest way to build your meter. Start off the match by jumping back and doing Hadokens. Build your meter while hopefully chipping your opponent. Don't constantly superjump since they are limited. Only superjump when you need to, as in when they are about to do a super. Whenever you jump towards your opponent, always jump in with a FK and FP Hadoken. You actually can cancel some moves in this game, such as: FP Hadoken, Shinkuu Hadoken. Those actually cancel into one another, probably because of the lag, but it works nonetheless. The best way to catch someone with this is to call Psylocke out, FP Hadoken, Shinkuu Hadoken. Even if it doesn't connect it will chip pretty good. Don't use Ryu's super hurricane kick, it isn't worth using in a real game since you will be vulnerable if you miss.
In every single game you must predict what the other person will do next. Being able to do this comes from experience, so go out and play a bunch of people and get a feel for how people play. By experience you should get a good idea of what someone will do next, and go by what they would do next. Why predict what people will do next? Because it gives you the advantage of getting out of a bad situation or exploiting the fact that you know what the other person will do. Example: If someone super jumps to the other side of the screen with one bar or more built up on their meter, always expect that they will fall down with FP Haduken, then Shinkuu Hadoken. If you know that they will do that then super jump to the other side of the screen as fast as possible or block. Always let them make the mistakes, not you. Have them set themselves up for a beating. Another example: Both of you are firing Hadokens at each other. Sooner or later the other person is going to super jump to the other side. What does that mean? Since you know that they're going to land on the other side and attempt to do a super, dash to where they were, jump in the air and do a Shinkuu Hadoken. Block as much as you can, because blocking fails a good 50% of the time so block just to be cautious.
Never super jump in the way of a Shinkuu Hadoken and block. More then likely blocking will give out and you will fall into the super, so if someone is going to do a super and you are in the way, just block. Also, super jumping fails a good amount of the time too, you will sometimes just normal jump. So don't cut your super jump too close or you will end up paying for it. That's why you must predict, so you don't have to cut things soo close. Plan ahead!!!!!

Not really... the game's still practically the same.
I've been playing a lot of the current "greats" in WT35, and the strategies are the EXACT same as what fear, myself, and others were using a year+ ago.
Only things that have changed are characters and host games (which seem to cause more lag then reg. quick games).
Nothing significantly different as far as strategies and gameplay is concerned...
Nice try at boosting your ego there.

asshole- U beat me by so much because i didnt play for 7 god damn months and i decided to come back for a day to check things out. All this info is from my experiences around the time of the TOC3, not now.
wrestlemania- your opinion's fine, but u see i used those strageties when I played and look what happened. I became the best and I won a tournament. Those strageties might not work for you but they clearly worked for me since I couldnt be beat back then. :D
All i'm saying is that stop trying to invent combos since there arent any real ones in the game. You want to be good, understand lag and predict what will happen next. If this game was lag-free then i would have a completely different strategy.
You want to be good, understand lag and predict what will happen next.
That being the most important single thing that makes ANY player "great". Nobody can last long without that ability. You can be just as fast, or faster then your opponent, but if you can't predict where they are on a constant basis and never hit them with your supers, you're screwed.

Yes that's true, but if your oPPonent is someone like cycloPs, or Chunli or even sPidey, they can keeP jumPing in the air OVER n OVER(maybe not sPidey that much) and get away from all of your attacks

Yes, that's a good strategy, but again if your oPPonent is someone like Cyc or Spidey, there's NO TELLING what they will do next.. you should know how much thy skiP!
So.. there ya go.
Like how you keeP bragging that you were the BEST, well that was when there was only Ryu, Wolvie and Chunli... ( I don't mean that in a bad way.. )

Well you see this game has gone to #### since cyclops and spiderman were put in. What i mean is that the only true non-cheap players still in the game is ryu. chun and wolvy arent cheap, but wont win against ryu. Cyclops and spiderman arent even characters to be used seriously since anyone who is anyone can be good with them, since all you need to do to be good with them is to be able to do: optic blast(for cyclops) and :spider ball (for spidey). Ryu is the only person that actually takes skill to use. The reason i dont give faq's on how to beat cyclop and spidey is because they arent real characters in my book, they are used by cheap ass no skilled losers.
thats true i must agree...tmyapp gave all the rights to vips..i thought people were just helping because they like the game and now actually they get more rights than us?why is that?
where is the equality damnit? :0
I less then appreciate having to state the obvious...
But as for you, 2000... What exactly did you eman by "Nice try at boosting your ego"? You starting something?
FYI, I think it's pretty clear EXACTLY why I posted that. Here you go:
Fear, is that why the last time we fought (couPle weeks ago), I demolished you?
Of course you used to be good with what you did,and I was only able to beat you SOMEtimes... but last time we fought I could've almost get a Perfect!
Anyone with a single brain cell can see that scoring "brownie points" at fear's expense were the ONLY reason you made those comments. As you have seen throughout my posts on this forum, I back people up who are right in all cases, regaurless of what they think of me.
Yes that's true, but if your oPPonent is someone like cycloPs, or Chunli or even sPidey, they can keeP jumPing in the air OVER n OVER(maybe not sPidey that much) and get away from all of your attacks
Then guess what you do? USE AERIAL ATTACKS! It's not a hard concept.. you can tell when your opponent is jumping in the air constantly just by seeing where they land, LISTENING for super jumps, and watching what kinds of attacks fly at you (some such as jump web ball will be different from others). And for this, nothing solves your problems like gene splices, dragon punches, air hadokens, air optic blasts, rocket punches, jump and mk (sentinel), f d f kick (chun li), drill claw... etc. If you're consistently losing because your opponent jumps too much it's your own fault because there are plenty of anti-air defenses in this game.
if your oPPonent is someone like Cyc or Spidey, there's NO TELLING what they will do next.. you should know how much thy skiP!
If you can't tell what your opponent's doing next, then you don't win many games. That's a dead give away of a bad player right there. All you have to do to predict what your opponent does is ask yourself "hmm... what did they do last time they were doing this certain combination of moves with that same level bar status." 100% of the players in this game have favorite moves, or combinations, and definitely everyone has their own fighting style. 1 match is plenty to determine how they'll be fighting you for the rest of the game.
you never really were good!
You know, your and wrestlemania's persistant posts of how great you are and ####ty other people fight does more to get under my skin then anything else I've seen posted in in this forum. So tell you what, find me on aim (plasma256), and we'll arrange some match to determine this. Of course you'll get the host so that you won't be in ANY danger of losing (wouldn't want that now would ya?). However, I do require that we both use the same characters on lv. 0, no tag, so as to be the most like a reg. "quick game" match for either one of us.
PS: Quit caPitalizing your P's. It just makes you look like you can't sPell.

This whole ryu's the greatest it getting at me. Sure he's one of the originals and has a cool past and fighting technich and is very very cool, but he's not the best. Try using some other dudes and you'l see!
Wolvie is just as good and on a ryu vs a wolvie i recon Wolvie would have a good chance of winning, still it all depends on skill.

All of what i am talking about deals with THIS online game. Now if we were talking about xmvssf on mame then i would understand about u guys saying that ryu isnt the best in THIS game. But since lag and cheapness rule in THIS game, the really only fun non cheap character in THIS game is ryu. Once again, wolvy, spidey, cyc are all good and non cheap in the real arcade game, but not in THIS version of the game.
asshole- Hold on I forgot how tournaments you won and how good you actually were in the game. How many tourney's did you win? And I was never good, hmmm.............is that why for like 2 months tarkanx and nferno666 couldnt beat me along with everyone else? Uhhh... You idiot, by saying that I beat fear was only to tell him that his OLD Strategies are worthless nowadays.. He's beaten me before MANY times, im not afraid to admit that... Oh and for that match you wanna arrange.. sure.. let's do this whenEVER, and for you saying "I can host" because that'd increase my chances of winning, well i'd rather have YOU host.. I've never really hosted a game, you can ask anyone!

youuuuuuu Bastard!!! youre practically giving it away!!! i spent a year and a half perfecting this, and you give it away in one post
seriously though, I heartily agree with everything in his post. Being quick is indeed important, but when you can predict what the opponent is gonna do, you have a huge advantage. But there is one "ability" that fear missed, one which i recently started working at (by recently, i mean christmas....damn college....). Not gonna go into detail, but it amounts to this: when theres lag, play defensively. But defensively in this case refers to minimizing chances for lag to screw you over--for instance, if youre lagging, dont go for a double super. If you see him do a super, understand that afterward, you will both be synched.
and guys, chill out. Fear is trying to help out some people; i dont care how good or bad he is or was, his theories are sound, and i myself have used them the past year and a half. If someone disagrees with them, thats fine, but no need to start a flame war here, guys.

Good strategies....yeah good if they still worked. If it were that easy to win and predict lag...why are you not kicking arse anymore?. At least asshoie admits he's not as good anymore. Some of you write post's as if YOU STILL PLAY THE GAME and that really pisses me off. Since I got here I dont let a week go by where I dont put in some time into the game itself.
I know it's hard for you guys but if you actually go into the server's and not just the forum...i might respect your opinion's on the actual game alot more.
Stop wasting my time as well as others with these long winded post's that mean absolutely nothing...you pretty much stated the obvious in that post anywayz fear....yeah big tip you gave away there.....right.
Stick to talking about what you guys know about like "how to retire" or "how dam good I USED to be". Im getting real tired of this stuff, I remember back in the day the server was clouded with names like Tark, nferno, professor, unknown, mvc2sucks, fear, and a whole bunch of others.....nowadays....what?...I'll tell you what! none of you are around....ppl like KKS and gothicarchangel who are still VERY active despite the numerous ver. changes should be the ones who speak on these subjects.
Oh yeah and 2000 b/c you have great grammar (on a forum...hehehe...big whoop! ) I automatically assume that you are a highly intelligent person....yeah right
**oh yeah 2000 if the game is so much like the older ver. (hehehe!!!! I guess you really dont play at all...hehehe)...why do most of the past "greats" suck now?....hmmm I guess their strategy is still working....or is that why the old guys want the ol' school version so bad....oh thats right it's b/c they can still hang in the new versions....how silly of me to forget.**

i beat kks and dxzero...with chunli..
Damn you. Stop saying you beat me. You keep saying you beat me w/ sentinel when I was Ryu(you MAY have, but I can't remember) but I know you didn't beat me w/ chunli. Only two ppl have beaten me w/ chunli while I was Ryu, and your name isn't Sportschick or itssounfair. So stop.
Oh, and fear. As you may or may not have seen me point out on my last senshuk update, nice strategies w/ Ryu.
hmmm man i have the screen the 1st time i ever played you....i was only usin chunli at that time... and as far as me v you on xmen goes..ive beat u more than times than youve beat me...u mean you honestly cant remember when i beat yo ryu in your game...then u snapped pick cyclops and still lost??

asshole- Hold on I forgot how tournaments you won and how good you actually were in the game. How many tourney's did you win? And I was never good, hmmm.............is that why for like 2 months tarkanx and nferno666 couldnt beat me along with everyone else? If i was never really good, then how did i end up beating tarkanx in the finals of the toc3?
You idiot... I was talking to 2000warrior when I said "You were never good". BUt since we're on this toPic, let's talk about it...
Tourneys, I won 0 because I ONLY joined two, which were ToC2 and ToC3, in ToC2 I was a new commer.. after I joined the Game, I left for a while, so I was still a "n0.0b" to the game. And in ToC3, I just quit the daned thing, because I KNEW I wasn't gonna win cuz there were better fighters than me, such as yourself at the time.
But about the TarkanX and Nferno thing.. go ask them, thou they stood a chance agianst me, but I won most of the games.. well against Tark. ( Sorry to say that Mario. ) And against Nferno, also go ask him that EVERY time I hosted a Quick game, I won it.. and EVERYTIME HE did, he won..
And that guy "LordOberon" how he was Undefeatable... Well I was the 1st(or 2nd) of the ONLY two that beat him! Now believe it or not, I even told him that he should fight you, because I admired you, and he said that he DID fight you and whooPed you... so what to say about that?
I mean I always thought he was you, but he said he whooPed you, so either way... yeah I was good!
And another thing you might say "Well how many times did you fight him?" uhh I ONLY fought him twice, the first match(es) I won, and the 2nd I lost.

Pip-when did we play? I honestly only seen you in the forums. you wanna have a little game? my ryu vs your sent? If you do u better not play so god damn ####### cheap, like doing his lazer beam the entire match. Because anyone can win with that.
Virus-why did i leave? Because I accomplished what i wanted, I won a tourney and was the best(no matter what anyone says I was the best for a short amount of time). And the fact that all the good people were gone and it was clear that they werent coming back at all, and with the insertion of tag mode and all the lag and cheap characters(cyc, spidey) that came with it made me leave. I would come back if there were alot of actual good people.
asshole-quick game is #### because u cant pick turbo. And lordoberon.........He was good, i only played him once and since i thought he was just some #### who talk's ####, I didnt give it all i had.

Fear, this was when Quick Mode was good!
Oh and PiP, I hear a LOT about you being good with Sentinel against all Ryu users... I've ALWAYS seriosuly wanted to fight you. I'm not saying I can beat you or anything and im not trying to prove you wrong, I just wanna se your skills.
So, how about a match someday?
You can make all the rules you want, and I know that Sent is slow, so if you feel the need to do the same move over and over, that's totally cool with me.. so whetever works for you, just let me know! ;]
Btw, I'm not calling you cheaP, it's just that EVERYTIME I fight with Sent, I HAVE to be cheaP.

asshole hear how it goes ...ok dont belive me but try and understand i own most ryu users cause with MY PC SENT IS FAST.......i accpet and just cause i have beat all teh best ryu users doesnt mean im indestrutable...dude my fps is always 40.0000 i have virtually no lag..but i always have a speed advantage and the only way to win with sent v ryu IS NOT 2 B CHEAP and if u wanna play best of 3..helpers on. choose any1 but spidey.
asshole
03-25-2003, 05:45 PM
Allrighty, seems fair enough..
Just PM Me whenever ou CAN fight, and we'll do this.
Btw, I 'ONLY' choose Ryu, and no i'm not a ViP, so don't worry about the new sPecial move...(Shungokusatsu)
Oh and yeah ofcourse ill choose Ryu, that's the ONLY reason I wanna fight, just to see how good you are!

Anyone with any skill could see your strats are sh|t as!
Never never share your strats with anybody, cause if there good(and there not) they'll use em' and if there not you'l get flamed to a crisp! :angryfire:
And light punch doesn't increase your level bar quicker, cause its weaker you have to use it more to increase you level bar.
by the by, has anyone noticed that when using cyclopes heavy puch, while his blast is flying through the air you can keep pressing hp and the level bar goes up with out doing anything!

.......
Sharing strats with people is what makes the game better, it makes it more competitive, that's what makes it fun...
By the way fear, good job with the Ryu strats... I'm too lazy nowadays to put up any strats, unless I'm bored..
Neo_genic
03-26-2003, 06:32 PM
DOnt ya think the game would be booring if every one used the same strats or knew how to beat your?
I think not...
Neo_genic: I suppose it doesn't as a shock to you that every decent Ryu user does just that strategy vs. other Ryu players. If your strategy isn't based upon those same fundamentals of running, jumping, super jumping, and building up your super metter like crazy, then you won't survive long in a game filled with lag.
Just try finding an unorthodox Ryu fighter that can put up a good fight without doing that... there's none. In the end, most everyone maxes out their abilities in this game, and at that point they're so familiar with the keys victories are decided by lag (host), helpers, and natural speed. Since everyone can achieve a speed consistent with his move recovery rate and near-instant blocking, predicting lag becomes the only other thing that can give you the edge.
Bottome line: Everyone who's worth a dam uses that strategy with Ryu, it's practically common knowledge. There's just different levels of degree of speed, lag, and lag prediction (and to some degree, your helper) which are the deciding factors of who win.
Neo_genic
03-26-2003, 06:50 PM
So in the end skill has nothing to do with it?
In the end, skill is what leads everyone to fight that way.

Some how a relization of that kinda takes the fun out of it.
I guess theres allways other characters and combos to master...

Fear I mean no disrespect....but what you and many others did was the equivalent of taking your BALL and going home with it. Honestly I also believe you were the best for a couple of months....but you were not unbeatable and lag play's a part in ALL games.
A whole big crew of "greats" left after tag....I mean what happend? you guys could'nt adjust?....or ois it more like what i REALLY THINK the problem is.
I see it this way...outside of here (in the game of your choice) you seem to be a championship player. Some of us are the same....if I were to take over half of the current community and face them on an arcade machine they would get sent home crying.....but thats not the situation. I see it like this....the whole crew that left...you guys dont like to lose. I mean god forbid you guys lose a game here and there so when tag was released and you found out that you had to adjust...you just left. Gee thanx for leaving guys...I mean I really enjoy playing all the ##### nowadays...yeah I really appreciate it.
I also do not believe that you accomplished everything fear as a matter of fact I highly doubt it. Im not sure if you heard about this little thing coming up but it's the FIRST official tournament...you know as in first OFFICIAL. Im sure you can follow this to the end so my point is made.
One more thing how could you say that there are'nt alot of good players around? compared to the ol' days...sure youre right. If you play at all nowadays you would know that once in a while a good player comes along who knows how to handle themsleves....since tag there have been alot of them. Do not keep that usual blind eye some have around here if you want comp. you'll find it.
I mean dont get me wrong I do not want to discredit you at all you were one of the best....my goal is to get under your skin enough for you to come back...hehehe!. This goes out to all you so called "vets" who dont play anymore.....Do you really want to let the title of first OFFICIAL T.O.C champ to fall into ##### hands!?...get the rust off the key board and grab the ball from your closet's and represent for what this place used to be...instead of just thinking about the good ol' days.

I 2nd VIRUS plea for you so called "retired old geezers" to come out of retirement. VIRUS, I, and the few other vets that still play may not be able to make sure TOC doesn't land in the hands of some n-o-o-b by ourselves.

...friggin tons more I havn't even fought yet. But I think there's 2 reasons "old vets" don't really veiw these guys as good:
1. The "old farts" got better, so their perception of what was "great" changed. People who used to seem pretty good turned out sucking once they learned to block, others who gave good challenges turned into crappy competition after months of experience. So the "greats" of today don't seem to meassure up to who used to beat them... before they became "great."
2. Lag changed. It's harder to predict it after 4evr, so fighting someone now when if they had been fought using the SAME technique/characters a year ago would have seemed pretty even-laged, now would seem too biased to the other guy. Not keeping up with the game throughs off your sense of what your opponent is recieving.
And because of that (a combination of the 2), it seems like the people who own the game now wouldn't challenge "back when there wasn't as much lag," or better yet, "back when I was still learning to fight and could predict lag better."
Try taking a year off the game some time... see if it doesn't seem like everyone who's rumored to be great when you come back is just beating you because you can't host anymore.
Just think back to the first guy who really beat the hell out of you. Did that not leave an impression that they were great in your eyes? And now think back to the first time you destroyed someone who seemed to fight the exact same way because you'd gotten better. I'm willing to bet you didn't get the same impression of greatness. This is exactly what I think happened/is happening to people who achieve greatness and then quit for extended periods of time.
BTW, I am starting to play in the WT's on a regular basis

There are other greats around here I mean has anyone played CaSe, Tupac, and blaze?.
I remember there was a point in time where CaSe was over 350 wins and 0 losses.....yeah 0 losses  . I said to my self "It can't be"...then I played him and let me tell you one thing...I have been here a while and when case is on his game there a very few that can stop him.
The same goes for some others the comp is still around and the list of good to great players grows all the time but, like KKS said there are not enough of us at this point to make SURE a deserving individual wins the first major tournament.
