Well, I felt like being a teacher and schooling everyone that doesn't pay attention in Earth Science based classes.

So please ask me any question that you might not understand about Earth Science.(Random Insanity no flaming this topic is a little useless so what I'm bored)

Well, Tupac the term "tectonics" comes from the greek word "tektonikos" meaning "construction." There for tectonics is the study of the formation of features in the earth's crust.

Plate Tectonics is meanly a theory that not only describes continental movement, but also proposes a possible explanation of why andow continents move.

Tupac you said "Tell me how many Tectonic Plates there are?"
Now Plate Tectonics is a theory, but I think you are asking for how many layers there are in the earth's crust.

Here are the layers=

The earth consists of two types of crust which is=
Oceanic and Continental.

Lithosphere=Those two different crusts make up this layer.

Asthenosphere=The layer beneath lithosphere.

Now the earth has 4 major layers, but think you where reffering to the crust.

The answer= 2

Sorry to the Moderators if this image is to big.....

But its for education :buttrock:

Well seems there is more plates than u imagined.

The earth's surface is broken into seven large and many small moving plates. These plates, each about 50 miles thick, move relative to one another an average of a few inches a year. Three types of movement are recognized at the boundaries between plates: convergent, divergent and transform-fault.......

I live in California i should know alot about tectonic Plates

The closest Fault around here is the San Andreas Fault.......
Thats where the mayor earthquakes come from in California

Yes Cali has is in an area where earthquakes are very likely to to happen.Interesting I thought there where only 7 Tectonic plates.Wait, I'm going to ask you something PRO.

Who was the scientist that proposed the theory of the "Continental Drift"?

Tupac the first name is correct his last name is Wegener.

Ok, Mooo1 first you must understand what is inside volcanoes.Don't answer with lava because would hav to say that is incorrect.Magma is lava before it is exposed to the earth's surface.

Now, to answer your question. The pressure from the movement of plates opens areas that lead to the earth's "mantal."The mantal is the layer below the earth's crust. Now we as the human race can never dig to the mantal because the heat is about 500 to 800 degrees there. So the way the rock from the mantal which is magma reaches the earth surfaces is by the pressure of the movement of the plates.

When I say plates don't mean the same plates as Tupac I'm talking about the "Plate Boundaries".There are three in all.

There names are =

Divergent Boundary
Convergent Boundary
Transformation Fault Boundary

Anymore questions if so I will break the proces down to you in a more simple way.

Chemistry ehhh ok,

Name me atleast three chemical elements that are nonmetals.

Ok, for those still studying Earth Science.

In the image a few post above you will see animage of "Pangaea" brought to you by Tupacwestsider.

Now for the next question.

Surrounding Pangaea was a huge ocean. The ocean meant "all seas" So tell me what was the name of that ocean?
