In the game, when the chat window comes up, the player's commands to his/her character don't go through. Now, some players may abuse this, by typing something in between matches so the other player loses a second or so, which is enough for someone to get a good lead! Also, with the idea that players should be able to watch other player's fights flying around, ideas like this are becoming more important. How would you handle chat from spectators? This is my idea:
Instead of a pull-up chat window, I think that the game could use a dedicated chat window that is open all the time. If you wanted to chat, you'd click on a button that activates the window. However, since the window would be open all the time, it wouldn't interrupt the gameplay. Of course, players would have to stop playing in order to type, but if someone else types something in that you don't want to reply to, you wouldn't have to close the window to continue playing. What does everybody think? |

A cool Idea, but the current chat window already fills up 1/4 of the screen and that is pretty big, considering we need to see to fight!

The answer is easier than that. Just hit [Esc] on the keyboard and the chat box will collapse instantly. Besides, most people just like to say things like 'Good game' and such in the middle of matches. I've never found somebody who took advantage of it.

Thanks for the input, everyone! The main reason I came up with this idea was if players were allowed to watch another player's match, if we had a permanent chat window off to the side, bottom, or wherever, we wouldn't need to worry about them interrupting gameplay. Unless, of course, someone comes up with a way to allow non-intrusive chat without having a chat window up...
Of course, another easy solution is to include real-time voice recognition into the game, where players could speak into a mic or headset, and the player's speech would be played in the game. However, this is unlikely, since including something like this would probably hoard money, memory, bandwidth, etc., so the chances of this are pretty low, I'd say... And yes, some players actually type crap in between matches to throw you off. Sometimes it'll be a taunt, or it may be a faked plea for help. Granted, the majority of players who type between matches would never do that, but a select few actually try it...and it only makes me beat them even harder...
