The doctor can't help him, because you can't stop it manually. However, there are a few ways to minimize the discomfort. If you have a fever, take some Tylenol, otherwise try to stay away from medicines. Try to have moist meals, which, btw, is a great excuse to have lots of ice cream (thinking of my brother). Be sure NOT to eat citric fruits, and foods that are high in acidities, since those foods can cause pain.
Now, those should help keep away extra pain, but the only way to stop the initial pain is to take two pieces of cloth (not made of wool, since wool will hurt you) place some ginger between them, make it warm, and then wrap it all around your neck. If you make it warm enough, it should be a bit moist from the juices of the ginger which can help soothe the pain if applied.
BTW- Check your immunization files to see if you got all of your MMR vaccinations. They prevent the mumps from happening.
