ummm i think capcom added the characters determined by a few things..

in xmvssf.. they had the original characters of sf1 and xmen

in mshvssf.. they added popular characters (dan, spidey, c. america, sakura) and some more marvel monsters that were new ideas..

in mvc.. they had made it big, its not sf anymore, so they scraped up some dust and put it in a pocket, (strider, capCom, venom, megaman..)

mvc2.. combine the vs series, added more leftovers (felicia, sentinal, hayato, etc.)

so basically, they ditched the sf series and took what they were working on at the time and added them in.... *yawnz*
