Maxi is there, but you don't fully understand his ending. What really happened...

Maxi fought against Astaroth and killed the big guy. Now, Astaroth was the servant to Ares, God of War. Now, you can't just go kill a servant of a God without consequences. A fissure opened up the ground, swallowing Maxi and leaving his nunchakus behind (at this point the ending is accurate where Kilik and Xianghua are on his ship and cast the nunchakus in).

Maxi was paralyzed from the neck down, but was rescued by a villager and taken to a remote village. There he stayed (paralyzed) in the village until rumors of Astaroth being alive reached his ears. He called the medicine man and a concoction was made from a shard of Soul Edge to heal his injuries, but in return for his ability to move and seek revenge he had to lose something of equal importance: the concoction made him forget of his friends Kilik and Xianghua.

Now, Astaroth was brought back from the dead by Ares. He was made stronger because a human didn't create him this time; Ares himself did.
