Ryu is an all-around good fighter, and is generally well-rounded. He is a close to mid-range fighter, but can use some distance attacks like Shinkuu Hadouken.

Ken is a close-range fighter with very limited projectile distance. He is more designed for quick combos. All three of his supers are close-range, too.

Akuma is a character with moves for most any situation. He can fight more like Ryu than Ken, but also has some especially close-range move properties, so he, in a sense, fights like a mix when it comes to strategy.
