When people are burning down your house, shooting your brothers, threatening your life, and threatening the life at your family, there is no other option.
It wasn't "equality, please", it was "equality at any means neccessary".

...Excuse me but MLK house was blown up too and his family was nearly killed. He was sent to jail and did you ever see him pick up a gun? No, because you see there is another option and that is peace. Do you know how many times ppl threatened MLK and his family...and again I ask did you ever see him pick a weapon or raise a fist in anger. NO!
