The ending suffix -ide and -ate is talking about the charge of the group of atom(s). If the group of atom(s) has a negative charge then the name of that ion/group of atom ends with the suffix -ide. The the group of atom(s) has a postive charge then it ends with he suffix -ate.

Also the diffrence between Sulfate and Sulfite is the formula, the formula for Sulfate is SO (4 at the bottom, after o....Negative 2 at the top after the 4)

And the formula for Sulfite is SO (3 at the botto after the O...and Negative 2 at the top after the 3) SUlfite and Sulfate are similar but diffrent, but they they are made from Sulfur the element....Hope i helped u...
