the cache is a place on your hard drive that is used to store things temporarly. When you visit a website your browser stores parts of it in the cache area, so that the next time you use it, or access the site, you computer just looks to the harddrive, instead of redownloading the whole thing again. This allows you to increase your access speed to the web site.

When you clear your cahce you are simply deleting the contents in it.
