I know what you mean. I got on the game earlier and after i beat a few people I noticed that they started to complain about 'I hit you and you didn't take damage'..blah..i tried to explain to them that this was caused by lag.

Lag Explanation (in simple terms)

Lag is a term used often. It relates to slow internet speed, sometimes due to a server problem, but more commonly due to the connection between server and client.

A lagger, is someone who uses a slow 56 kbit/s modem to connect to the internet, then joins a multiplayer game (such as SFO) and who has a high ping time. In synchronous games, where all clients must know the exact game state, a single "lagger" will slow down the game for everyone, since the server has to wait for the client to get every communication packet.

What is Ping?

A protocol that sends a message to another computer and waits for acknowledgment, often used to check if another computer on a network is reachable.
