If you were going to put the word "American" as one of the poll choices I would expect there to be other choices like "British" "European" etc. but instead you get specific... then you generalize. So people end up having two things that fit them.

Here is an example of why your poll is haywire...

What are you?

Cat
Dog
Lion
Mammal

See, all of those fit under the category mammal... Same with your word American (in most cases).

This example poll is not making the word mammal have a different meaning (such as your American is to White). Why can't you just say white?

In population studies, they even use the word White. Is it some sort of taboo word? lol
