Just because you see your character hitting their character on your screen, does not mean that you are actualy hitting your opponent on their screen....and thats the important part.

Your opponent will not lose health if you are not hitting them on their screen.

The transfer of data from your computer through the internet to your opponents computer and back is not instantanious.
In that short time frame, your opponent has plenty of time to block, move away, or break your attack on their screen, and without you seeing it happen.

Hence why they dont take damage.
