FYI, f(x,y) COULD mean anything. X2+X+Y2 will not be a strait line by any strecth of the imagination. Nor would X2+Y. The fact that it is parallel to the z plane (or third dimension) is irrelevant and will only "appear" as a strait line if you gaze upon it directly on a 2 dimensional plane showing z and either x or y while ignore the other dimension.
