This isnt a question for people who own or play the Final Fantasy series. Its a technical question for playstation owners in general. Well anyways besides that. To put it clearly some Playstation1 memory cards aren't capable to work in some Playstation2's memory "readers". Or the other way around. To really go into detail about your problem then read next paragraph...
Ok so let me get this straight. Your "friend" gave you a copy of fVIII which was made for the Playstation1 correct? Being you own a Playstation2 and a Playstation2 memory card which was built FOR the Playstation 2. Ok then you tried to use your Playstation2 memory card to save your game progress on the game that was made the Playstation1. Then the software which is the fVIII disc trys to copy its data onto the memory card which was made for the Playstation2. Hmm thats where you run into a problem. Sensing that the data cannot be copied unto "alien" hardware. Alien meaning the software being the fVIII disc which was made for the Playstation 1 cannont configure the Playstation2 hardware being your memory card. So I suggest you just get a Playstation 1 memory card when trying to save your games which are coded for the Playstation1 system. Well hope you learnt something from those little sentences I wrote.
