Sounds like you have "slim pickin's" for cards at the moment.
So I'll offer a bit of advice.
Rares are NOT "where it's at", they are nothing but show.
Dont get me wrong, I have seen some bad ass combo's with rares that are just staggering...but not worth the price, or hassle of trying to acquire.
Commons, Semi-Commons are the way to go. THAT is where all the power is at, AND the most versatility of combonations and effects...toss in a semi-rare here an there, and with all that versatility you become unstoppable.
Well...not "unstoppable"..every deck has a weakness, even a "locked" deck can have a "key" constucted to unlock it.
Best part about commons and semi-commons are that they are easy to acquire.
But it is an evil game. It becomes a "habit". It can become the only thing you think about, and the only thing you wanna spend your money on...wich brings me to my next bit of advice.
DONT go rushing out to buy the uber latest editions of Magic from the local card dealer...buy yourself "package deals" off of e-bay, if you intend on buying into the game...you will save your self ALOT of money this way.
If you feel you "must" goto a local dealer. Make sure they have a "commons box" that you may browse through. Most if not all dealers place rares, and semi-rares in their commons box as bait, or because they screwed up. So if you do goto a card shop, set aside enough time so that you can rifle through ALL of the loose commons they have for sale. You usualy get a better price then what is posted. PLUS you will get yourself a handfull of rares/semi-rares to play with as well as all those "gotta have" commons and semi-commons..all dirt cheap.
Lastly...dont become too consumed with the game.
I have seen MTG encourage arguments, fights, theft of cards and destroy age old friendships in a single game.
..i should know. I played for 5 years and passed one of the MTG instuctors test/courses...Got a free "Official Magic the Gathering Instuctor" T-shirt and everything. :0
...so i seen alot of games.
But alas, I have not played a single game, or looked at a single card for 3 years now.

(except to post my Crypt Rats deck or course..i love that thing)
