The official story line taken by Namco is a combination of Kilik's, Xianghua's, and Maxi's endings.
Maxi fights and kills Astaroth. Ares, the master of Astaroth, is angered and opens a ravine underneath Maxi's feet. Maxi breaks his neck and floats downstream and is nursed by a small village. He eventually has a shard of the sword Soul Edge used to restore his ability to move, but he forgets about Xianghua and Kilik because of it.
Kilik and Xianghua fight Nightmare and defeat him. Inferno comes out, and releases Siegfried (Nightmare) from his power. Siegfried tries to flee while Kilik uses Dvpravka-Yuga (the thing around him in Soul Calibur) to seal Inferno's power, and Xianghua fights him. Xianghua sends her sword, the Soul Calibur, into Inferno's skull and breaks the sword Soul Edge because of it. The world of Chaos begins to crumble, and the two leave with the sword still in Inferno's head.
Inferno survives (barely) and thusly the sword is barely intact. Inferno reclaims partial control over Siegfried when he is asleep, and has enough control over him when he is awake to make him carry Soul Edge around. Slowly, Soul Edge regains strength by killing people and consuming their souls.
Oh, and Astaroth... Ares resurrects him at Orstreinsburg Castle, where the final battle took place.
