NEWS EXTRACT

Scientists are investigating a mysterious sea creature washed up off the coast of Chile.

It is unclear whether the 13 tonnes of gelatinous material, dubbed 'The Blob', is a giant octopus, a squid or just a piece of rotting whale.

Scientists are now awaiting DNA tests in an effort to identify the 40ft organism.

The material was found washed up on Chilean beach on June 23.

It is mainly grey and pink flesh.

Some have speculated that it may be a giant sea monster, a sort of octopus.

It does resemble a giant octopus washed up on the Florida coast in 1896.

But it is lacking tentacles.

Other scientists have suggested it is part of a rotting whale.

Some 90% of 'monster' spots are large basking sharks or pieces of whale.
