Let's make this perfectly clear right off that bat.
Tournaments by their very nature are about competetion, and winning. If you're not winning in a tournament, it's probably not very fun. So saying that, (and I hate to put it this bluntly), but if everyone wants to pick spiderman because they can win with him, then thats the way its gotta be. If you're just looking to have "fun" (and by your definition that means playing with Ryu), then you can do that anytime you want -- just log into the game to do that. Tournaments are about winning by any means necessary.
As far as your belief that Ryu is a good enough character in the capcom vs snk 2 world, just visit
www.shoryuken.com, and you'll learn REAL quick that your boy can and DOES get his arse handed to him by any of the 3 people I mentioned. The competitive advantage those 3 people have over Ryu is ridiculous (sorry if I've broken any dreams you have about Ryu).
There have been, and there always will be top tier characters in these games -- tis life.
