ok, first of all you gottsa know if your sound card is still there !

FACT:
the volume controls don't disappear for nothing and doesn't do it on his own... two things can make it disappear like that, SOUND CARD being disabled or not installed correctly, which will lead you to a very very difficult reinstallation ! or the option in the control panel that says "SHOWS THE CONTROL IN THE SYSTEM TRAY" has been de-checked which means it was turned off !

first of all...
Quote:

start>programs>accessories>entertainment. click the volume control. change the settings
if that as been done, and you still don't have sounds, that mainly means that there are no sound cards working with those controls, which gives you a good guess that the sound card is in problem.

to be sure, go ahead and do this...

RIGHT-CLICK on MY COMPUTER.
then CLICK PROPERTIES
then CLICK MATERIAL
then CHECK if your sound card is still there !
if it isn't then your problem is there, you'll have to reinstall it !

in case it is there and working, try to check the option i was talking above.
goto CONTROL PANEL
then MULTIMEDIA
then CLICK AUDIO
then CHECK "SHOW THE VOLUME CONTROL ON THE TASK BAR"
after that, CLICK APPLY
then CLICK OK
then your on, it is suppose to appear there as soon as your over with that !

if it still doesn't help you, then i will need a lot more information since i don't have the computer in front of me !
hope it helped you !
good luck my friend !

its supposed to...its a lot

Resident Evil 05-10-2003 05:19 AM

oh yes i think i forgot but now i cant open sounds or multimedia.
oh and i have windows 98. and it did not work. i couldnt even open sounds or multimedia. oh and my sound card is crystal wdm audio codec. so is there something else i could do ??? :(

digital~fighter 05-10-2003 05:39 AM

iof you need codec go hereand download this progrem i am sure it will help you

SSJKarma 05-10-2003 12:28 PM

ok... thanks for the rest of the info, i can now tell you that your sound card is completely non existent !

CODEC doesn't equal sound card !
so if the only thing you see in the DEVICE MANAGER is your CODEC FOR the sound card, then you're clearly missing your sound card drivers !

to have a WDM AUDIO codec, that means you have an actual ON-BOARD SOUND CARD, which is easy to find if you know your motherboards name and revision !

ok here what i suggest... (hoping you know a little on how to reinstall drivers)

1 - go onto the motherboard manufacturer web site
2 - goto their drivers section and download your latest motherboards drivers.
3 - reinstall them completely.

you can also try to look for the CD that came with your computer, it should have the basic sound drivers on it !

if that doesn't help you, then there is nothing i can do more to help you on this. i would need to try something myself which i cant since i don't have your computer in front of me. also, if the problem is that big, then goto a local computer store that can repair it for you ! they should be able fix it right away !

GOOD LUCK resident !

EDIT:
digital fighter: how could DOWNLOADING THE DIVX CODEC help him out to have his sound card running again ?

DIVX = MOVIE PLAYERS !

that's really not his problems.
