As the title suggestion. I have started a new project site at http://www.no-install.com . If you own one of the small USB flash drives, an ipod or any usb driven mp3 player that can be mounted as a drive on your computer then this site might be for you. It's all about software you can load onto these portable devices and run from any computer anywhere without needing to install anything on the computer. Most of the software on this site you can just copy/unzip to your portable device, bring the device to any computer, plug it in and run the application right from there without having to install it. Almost all of them save all your settings in the software as well.

One good example is the Portable Firefox web browser. You just unzip this application to your usb thumb drive and browse web sites using it instead of the local browser on the computer your on which might be broken, corrupt, doesn't have your saved bookmarks, might be logging all traffic or one of the most common uses.... in some schools, business's, the local browser might be configured to go through a proxy or firewall to disallow certain websites. Portable Firefox doesn't won't use those settings and if the network is setup properly you can get around the firewall just fine.

There are many of other applications linked on the site to check out. It would also be nice to get people to sign up, post comments to the articles that are posted, maybe post your own articles (which are screened) about portable software or devices or something related or even post software that is known to work without having to be installed on the local machine.

P.S. If your not using Firefox as your browser even on your local machine, it's HIGHLY recommended. Click on the "Take Back the Web" link on the right hand side of the site a little ways down and get your copy, it's free.

this seems like a very nice idea...
though i thought it is rather common, many people have actually done something about it already
just that ur downloads section seems interesting

i already have a zipped version of doom colector's edition on my flashdrive, which i just unzip onto the comp's desktop and ready to go, then i just delete it and it's like i didn't do anything :D , I also used it to get my freid the doom.wad and doom2.wad so he didn't haved to worry about autdownloading for it on zdaemon, it's only like 23MBs...

What do you mean by "many people have actually done something about it already"? Have you seen other sites providing info/links to software to run off of portable devices with no local install required?

As well, what do you mean by my downloads section seems interesting.?

~Mastermax~: It is cool that you can get doom loaded on your stick, i'll have to try it out. Although it's not something I can post links to as the WAD files at least I think are copyrighted and cannot be ditributed in a packaged environment.

thats a nice site....soon as i get back home...il register and start using it

btw, does that firefox ipod shuffle double as a USB memory?

leftyfb 03-14-2005 11:47 AM

yes, thats how this all works. Using the ipod shuffle as a usb memory flash drive (need to put into disk mode), you can put all the software you find on my site onto the ipod shuffle or any other portable media and run it on any computer running windows.
