basically food is deemed a group word you never usually say ur going to eat "food" when ur just gonna eat a banana or some poop like that so because food is used as a group word it is not approproate top use the word "foods" just look in the dictionary and see if youfind it.

what r you talking about. just google the word
here's one of my findings

US FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition... Other regulatory agencies with responsibilities for foods. FDA Documents. ... Report Problems to FDA. Report Websites selling illegal foods / drugs / supplements. ...

i don't thinkg the US FDA would use bad grammar right?

now whos "dumper"

The FDA =/

Try to use foods in a sentance.

"Wow, that's alot of foods!"

WRONG.

"Eat your foods, johnny!"

WRONG.

"how much foods are you gonna order?"

WRONG.

in any sentance it's wrong.

food is a collective noun when talking about one type of food, foods is a plural for different types of food...

how can you say the FDA is wrong. that's a "weak" reasoning.
you r just saying they are wrong, but there must b a reason why they are using it. and don't tell me cuz they are dumb

i dont think it's for emph. actually peoples means "A body of persons sharing a common religion, culture, language, or inherited condition of life." so peoples is usually used in history books.

that's funny too "moneys" there's no such word as "moneys" but there is such word as "monies", even my business teacher uses monies.

i once heard on the news " people are traveling in the skies and on the oceans this xmas" i wonder how sky can be counted? is it one piece?

if you r smart enough to answer please give me an example, and a rule.

here's another example that someone did use the word "foods" but i still need a rule to know when to use it.

"These are foods I've made..and I'm sure no one else has done...

-Sun dried banana chips covered in caramel and chocolate.

-Deep fried burrito(lettuce, shredded cheddar, ground beef) with fried shrimp and tartar sauce.

-Minced onions,Food loin brand fish sticks,Champelles tomato soup mixed with Easy Mac,"

type food into dictionary.com.

it doesn't even say "plural for food", it gives the definition for food.

see, it's not a word, so there.

Shin_ryu

"wut" isn't a word, it's "what".
"duh" isn't a word eigther, it's slang.
"yea" isn't a word, it's "yeah"
"punk" isn't a word, eigther.

the dictionary is not alive

but humans are. language changes all the time

it's like using spell check in word. just because it says it's ungrammatical doesn't mean it is. you are the human you have to use your brain to make the better judgement.

the fact is, some pple do use the word "foods" and what i wanna know is the reasoning behind that.

Pyromaniac666

if youwanna say foods, say foods, if not say food. it is kind of like the word tomato. somw people pronounce it po-tah-to, and some pronounce it po-tay-to. u can say it however u want

Pyromaniac666
12-28-2004, 08:24 PM
sry, when i said tomato at the beginning, i meant to say potato. so now no one has to make any comments.

Use the word "foods" and not make it seem acward and wrong.

you can't do it, because foods isn't a real word.

Its a bit like the word "sheep". You can't say "I have sheeps", as the word "sheep" is both singular and plural. Its the same thing in this situation.

Just say whatever you want however you want, its your choice.

MEGA_DRACOS_XRL
12-29-2004, 11:05 AM
i got it like that

KenDaShoto
12-29-2004, 12:19 PM
u have been given a good explanation about three times its like when u say peoples which does emphasize difference because if all people were alike then the history books would say people instead of peoples
peoples meaning more than one group of persons with similar culture etc.
FOODS works the same way as you can look in the example put in earlier by mastermax
if youneed a rule get an english book and look under collective nouns
