how do you use helpers?

hello. i'm new to the world of x-men v. street fighter. it already has me hooked. i'm performing pretty well thus far. anyway, i'm wondering how do you use helpers? opponents i face use them, and i see them when i select my character, but how do i use them? thanks in advance.
