Unlocking characters

Do you have to beat the game a certain number of times to unlock a certain character or do you have to win a certain number of matches?

I'm only asking this because I haven't played this since this was called

no the way to unlock characters is to beat ppl as many times as the char u want.

No you have to beat other Characters so many times...and don't worry if you lose a couple of times because it doesn't subtract it just adds on.
