Gaining life - When getting hit with a power

i was just playing the x-men vs. streetfighter game and i played against gambit2k. everytime i hit him with a hydokken he gained life and when i hit him with a variable attack it hardly hurt him. i thought i was just lag, but his bar never went down. i waited and waited but nothing. someone tell me what happening. :(

yeah when i was fighting ppl their bar wouldn't go down and that was messed up. http://www.gamegen.com/fightgen/characters/spider-sting.gif :angry:
