[color=#000000:post_uid9]All right folks, the lag is just getting silly for me. I have a fast system with lots of memory. I have a fat connection to the 'Net. Although I normally run behind a firewall, I've tried hooking up to the cable modem directly, with no changes. I've even tried just using dial-up, to bypass anything to do with my network card. I've also made all of the recommended configuration changes to the game, and tried all the combinations of settings I can think of. It's slightly better running the installed client rather than the web version, but only slightly.

I [b:post_uid9]still[/b:post_uid9] lag like a mofo.

I can't have a lot of variety in my games, because if I don't play someone like Cyclops or Sentinal that has a beam attack, I typically am not going to hit anyone. No matter how many times I hit on my screen, it just isn't hitting on my opponent's due to lag.

I'm at a loss. I like the game, I've donated money to support it, but it's almost to the point where I can't play it any more. If someone can offer me any further suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Right now, about the only thing I can think of is that the game might not be 100% compatible with XP Pro SP2, but I'm not sure about that either. And yes, I've turned off Windows Firewall, disabled the unnecessary services, yadda yadda. I really [b:post_uid9]do[/b:post_uid9] know what I'm doing, I've just exhausted all the avenues of approach I can think of.[/color:post_uid9]

well there will always be"lag" in sfo but there is way's you can reduce it.go to opintions and click on network and when you see inertent connection click "low" and turn off the music and background.after that when you do varble your oppenet should lose life or some (not all of they block) and if that don't help go here:

I appreciate your reply, but anyone else posting, PLEASE read my whole post first. As I said there, I've already exhausted all of the configuration options I can find, and have been through all of the online documentation. I've also searched through all the forums here. I never post questions like this until I've done all my homework first, I don't like wasting other people's time.

There's no need to regurgitate information that can already be found online, because if it's there, I've already tried it. New suggestions/advice only, please.

You actually said it urself.. you've exhausted all the info on "lag" that you can find.. and read all the tutorials and studied everything to be studied.

but the bottom line remains that no one can give you more than you already have. There will always be the element of lag while playing SFO.

My advice?? Deal with it. We all do... there's nothing wrong with the game and it can only be tweaked to a certain extent to deal with the amount of lag we all face during game play. So in English, there really isn't anything that can be done about the situation.

Lag as you'd already know isn't the fault of SFO.. it's due to the interaction between both computers.. that amount of time (no matter how small) that it takes for the info from one computer to be sent to the other computer. It's not like a console game where information isn't streamed to another point over a period of time. Here we just have to deal with it.

And the truth is.. "you really aren't lagging".. If it takes a while for you to deliver hits to your opponent, and you've explained that you have a "fast" connection, then it might depend on his dowload speed. Dial ups and slower connections that download at a lower rate.. say 5kb per sec, wouldn't recieve all the hits that someone like you.. will be sending .. which would be in sense, an upload rate of about 25 - 40kb per second.

So as I said earlier, my advice?? Just deal with it. Enjoy the game for what it has to offer and not it's "outside/internet inflicted" shortcomings

Thanks for the reply, Blanka. FYI 'fast connection' = 750kps cable modem service.

I guess the reason I posted this was that, at least according to the people I've been matching up with, I seem to 'lag' a lot more than usual. People call me a cheater or 'cheap', and I don't enjoy that. I was hoping there was something I was missing.

About the only thing left to try would be a different operating system. I may fire up the ol' Windows '98 machine, just to see how the game runs there.

My advice on that one.. dude, forget it.. lol. With your fast connection, it'll probably bring up the same results... or if the performance of the OS you're gonna try is FAR less, then maybe you'll be on the recieving end of lower uploads and downloads.. and also FYI... even though it's a 750kps service, it does not mean that it'll upload data at that particular speed. It probably won't upload at the proposed 256k either.

For the game, I say... 40 is what you might be uploading

the only way to make lag 0% is to fight an opponent who has the EXACT same computer, connection, and everything...and the same ping (but same ping is impossible...the host's ping to it's own pc is always lower than someone's ping to the host's pc)...even if you tried to ping an ip that was is right next door to you

there is no way in sfo to have zero lag.you can reduce it but there will always be lag,you can try your best to get no lag, but it will allways be lag.

-thank you

yes indeed lag is a part of the game but there are ways to decrease the level of lag in your game with simple techniques.

1.USE THE DOWNLOAD VERSION smallscreen

2.since you use xp go to control panel>system>advanced>preformance>change settings for best preformance.

3.right click on desktop>properties>i forgot the name of the tab you shud go on its all the way on the right(sorry)>advanced>now there should be lots of tabs in a new window
the one you have 1st tells you your graphics card power.>check all the tabs till you can see a page which has several boxes and the words 'preformance' and 'quality' change all factors of it to preformance and apply the settings.

4.On the game main menu>options>audio>turn off music>other settings tab> check the no background box.

it is impossible to have no lag...lag is defined as the amont of time it takes to send info to another pc over the interent (similar to ping)...and can have high laG and low lag...but not no lag...if you had no lag then you wouldnt be able to log in

Appreciate the advice...thanks, folks. As a note to those interested, the game plays much MUCH better on an old Windows 98 box. I think there may be some 'issues' with XP or XP SP2 that I haven't been able to pin down.

XP SP2 Whaaa... Nferno666 and I are the folks I personally know of that use XP SP2 and play the game.. and we sure don't have anything wrong with the performance. My PC Specs would suggest it to be a mini monster.. Think about the intel p4 2.8 ghz with 512 RAM.. along that line. but in any case, one man's meat is another man's poison, so I say go with anything that suits you
