Election Capsule: Can Anyone be President? Almost
By VOA News
24 October 2004

An old American saying holds that anyone can be president, and in legal terms, this is largely true.

The U.S. Constitution says the president must be a native-born citizen who has lived in the country for at least 14 years and has reached the age of 35.

Anyone who meets those requirements, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation is eligible to hold the United States' highest public office.

In practice, Americans have elected presidents who fit into a more narrow mold. All 43 U.S. presidents have been white men of European descent.

Every president has been a Christian, and only one was not from a Protestant denomination, President John F. Kennedy, a Roman Catholic.

These facts have not stopped presidential hopefuls from trying for a breakthrough. The last 20 years have seen several female, African-American, and Jewish candidates mount credible campaigns for president and vice president, though none has won.

Some Americans have suggested opening the presidency to foreign-born citizens. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) has proposed a constitutional amendment that would allow an immigrant to run for president after being a U.S. citizen for 20 years.

If it passes, the old saying may have to be expanded to say that anyone in the world can be president. Of course, the final judgment will rest with American voters, who elect a new president every four years.

After reading this, i realized that for some reason only white christians have been presidents, but why? What is with white christians that make them get more votes then women, african americans, latino and non-christians?

If i wanted to run, would i win? Problably not because i'm not white, christian and am poor.

We have evolved from the days where black people couldn't even vote, or women couldn't vote, but all oppertunities are still not open to all.

And i'm not saying the whole system is racist and currupt, but in the election primaries, Al Sharpton kicked maximum ass. In every debate he was said to have won except for one, yet still came almost in dead last in the primaries.

When do you think we will see the first black president? Women president? Latino president? What about the first jew or muslim president?

Not for quit some time I'm afraid. People would vote against a black/womean/etc. just b/c they are black/woman/etc....

I think it is done like this still is because, even today, on every dollar bill it says "In God we trust", and was founded as a Christian nation...and has always been that way, which would be why it won't change for a long time, everyone is used to it, it's how it's always just been. Even though, we have celeberties taking office, I mean, "The Governator"? I heard also he is pushing for Non-Americans to be eligable for president. Probably because he would have a good chance at taking it!

but still down deep, I think it should still be a National Born American policy to be President. If your going to run the country, you should have to at least be born here. We can stem that out later, many people of all kinds of backgrounds are born here. I think the parent has to have been born here too.

Warmor: Arnie for pres? Remember "Demolition Man?" They already predicted, in that movie, that he'd be president after being governor of California. They called the governor bit, let's see if the're right about the president thing.

abe lincoln was poor

EVERYONE at that time was classified poor. He was middle class at the time. Not only that, but he had to run 12 different times for 12 different things before he was ever elected for anything.

and not all the presidents so far have been true christians.....

who are you to say this? Jesus?

you're right though, they've all been white...oh well, sooner or later sombody else will get elected...

More later than sooner. Not only has all the presidents been white christians, ('cept for kenedy, but he was assasinated so that sent us back like 100 years) but al of their OPPONENTS been white christians or white catholics.

AND their vice presidents, so it was

white christian and white christian vs. white christian and white christian.

I didn't question their religion, i questioned your questioning their religion.

I never said they were or they weren't, i just said stop acting like you are holy enough to judge their being good christians or not.

You and blaze both are part of the "good little christian" club. *rolls eyes*

you said:
only white christians have been presidents

I beleive that is assuming that they are christians....no?

and yes I realize that I cannot jugde whether or not someone is a christian.....I just made that other remark to be a smart ass.

btw you dont have to be "good" to be a christian.
and just because you are "good" doesnt mean you are one.

How do i know every presiden has been christian? They said so.
