this is really annoying, i mean im not american but our school curiculum tells us we need to study other nations' history

i mean its doesnt make any logical sense since we cannot apply this knowledge to our daily living

do i get a high paying job if i know who killed napoleon?
do i get a beautiful girl if i know why brutus killed ceasar?
do i get a brand new car if i know why the egyptians oppressed the israelites?

anyways, who really discovered america?
is it columbus, americus vespuci, the vikings... :(

Vespucci

And i know how you feel: I had to take a year of British literature and a year of World Literature in high school. When the hell am I gonna use the Tragedy of Oedipus, Japanese poems, and Shakespeare in my future?

none of the countries were really dicoverd since there were allways people living in them...but in the time that columbuse found out that america existed people still though that the earth was flat and because of that they only new about some countries

If I reiterate his statement, it would read like this:

"Which european explorer made America known to the rest of the world." Ppl are too literal about "the native americans were here first, so it wasn't discovered...yadda yadda...

Yes, it was the Native Americans..

And Christopher Columbus declared it!
He was going to the country "India" to get some spices, but his men were dying so thy landed on the first Island and declared it!

The first non-natives to find America were the Vikings. After that, Columbus found it.

i agree with you Dan, i always learned in school that Eric "the Red's" son Leif Ericson and the vikings discovered america before columbus.

The history of the north eastern continent (to the best of my recollection)

Ok there is a "fuzzy" area in the worlds history as to "Who found the north eastern continent"...I "may" have been the native american indians..it "may" have been the vikings...so heres the best history as I recall it from school..and little snippets from PBS.

Leaf Erik the Red...a viking beleived to have landed on the continent first (more towards the north eastern canadan way)
He didnt hang around...the land was "un-forgiving" so to speak...and he returned home....it was not even considered a new land at that time...just "some more land".

Native American Indian are assumed to have migrated from southern parts of the continent (IE: more towards Mexicos way). There is also debate that they may have migrated from the Western hemisphere (IE Russia/Asia's way) and came east through the north western part of the continent (IE: Alaska) and worked their way south and east following the coast line.
It was "just home" to the indians and had a spiritual name...essentialy meaning "God" of whateva....because the planet was not just some physical thing that you could own...and was your creator...individual land mass were of no consiquence.

The north eastern continent (ie: Canada, and USA) was not "announced" as "discovered" untill Christopher Columbus landed here...i beleive at that time it was still "just some more land"...they did give it a name...but i cant remember what...It may have been called america...but i dont think so.....

It realy didnt start being called "America" until the Pilgrims came here in an attempt to escape Britians over bearing rules and tax's (at that time.)
Upon arriving here the Pilgrims met the native American Indias...The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to survive off the land...Where the good hunting grounds where and what nuts, berries, and plants where ok to eat,and to use for medicine. ( Pilgrims had no clue...total dumb ass' )
The Pilgrims eventual set up colonies (lil towns here and there) and started calling them "American Colonies"

Eventual Britian sent it's armies over to "gain control" of the "new land" and the "American Colonies"...they failed.
The "free men" kicked the Brit's ass's at several wars.
The Britian Forces eventualy admited defeat, left America and returned home to Britian. Some colonists traveled north to start colonizing the Canadian regions...along with a buncha French Men that showed up some where around this time frame...dunno from where and why...but anyways....

Basicaly...in a nut shell...with alot of errors and mistakes....there is the history of the North American continent.

It's been a long time since I've been in school...and history was definetly not my best subject....so dont go putting this info on some kinda school report....because you will definetly fail that test.
:D

dunno where you are from BloodPack...but if it's Canada...Joo can thanks us Americans that you happen to live where you do and have the leaders you have. ;)

Nobody really discovered America.......everybody was living in different parts of the world that noboy thought anybody would be living there. They say that Columbus discovered America.......well......He discovered it because nobody in Spain thought there was land there. He went on ship to find spices and spread christianity. His firsty destination was to go to India.......He thought the people that was in America were Indians but....They were Native Americans. So technically he found America......for Spain. My opinion, nobody discovered America......The people that were there first was the Native Americans. I guess it sounds right ???

yeah I heard that to, they say during the ice age a bridge was from when the water froze. Linking Asia to America the asians in search of food and warmth went over the bridge. Then after the iceage it melted away, causing them to be stuck there.

the indians from Asia discovered it 30000 years ago without really knowing it........ then they stayed there because the ice bridge that linked Asia with America melted.......the vikings did came before Columbus do........
