View Full Version : There has to be more to hosting... - Besides firewalls and routers

06-09-2005, 12:29 PM
Ive must have gone on at least 10 different computers including ones at my school, the library, on labtops and none can allow me to host a game. I have turned off the firewall on my computer and labtop and i still cant host. Ive been on computers that dont have a firewall at all and STILL cant host. There has to be more to hosting besides firewalls and routers. I would really like to start hosting games because i have friends that want to play agaisnt me. So if any1 has info or details on how i can host, let me know plz :sleepy: *sigh*

as far as i'm aware, school networks, libraries and so on have thir own network (routers). How else could they have ALL those computers connected to the net. They're no individually connected to their very own modem. That would cost alot of money.

FACT is many computers have firewalls without people knowing it !

WINDOWS XP for itself comes with a firewall, and when behind a router it makes the computer have 2 firewalls !

and in itself i think the computer itself has a certain configuration for it !

Well at least i know why i cant host in schools and libraries. As for my computer, it's not routed and has direct connection with a DSL modem. Like i said before i have turned off my windows xp firewall, my freedom firewall AND my McAfee firewall and still no luck with the hosting. Im beginning to think that it might have something to do with windows xp models because all the computers i use at schools, libraries and home are windows xp. Oh, ummm...does having a phone connected to the modem count as routed? Well anyways If any1 out there use a windows xp and can host let me know how u did it. :plain:

You can't host using DSL even if you take off the router trust me becuase I have it.

Ah man if thats's true then that sucks. Are u sure? There has to be another way.

Trust me I have DSL and there is no way you can do that but if you turn it off still nothing so I say you need to get friends from the internet and get there messenger and whenever you are online and there playing sfo than tell them to host and you will join, thats really all i can say :p

I have a Windows XP and a DSL modem and i can host all the time...i also play in school and i also host.. so i dont think its the network (routers). There has to be another answer to your question...I forgot to mention that i have 2 firewalls and i can still host...One firewall is Norton and the other is Windows firewall..and both are up to date..So you might have a different problem...

i said it once and i'll say it again....a softare type of firewall aka norton/window XP firewall you can host...a hardware type of firewall aka routers you CAN'T. if you can host with a software firewall then that's your fault and not the the software....when the game is run for the 1st time when your using a software type firewall the firewall ASKS you if you want to allow/block all the ports the game wishes to use. if my accident you choose to block then you have to goto the firewall CP and allow the ports and give SFO the permission to allow it to use the 1626 port ot whichever port you use.

damnit nferno beat me to my post, i was going to say, you just set your program to allow either, the specific program to use the ports, or to set it to allow those specific ports to open all the time.

if you have a router the only way to open the port is to read the manuel for the router, find how to access your options and set one of the above. in theory most routers can do that, but i haven't seen it done before.

your better off not hosting and having your friends host. it's not really that hard.

Sometime's for some reason while playing I can host but when I host agian I can't host because my port stays zero.

When you disabled all the firewall ..did you restart the computer?..it might have to be restarted...if you want the firewall of the Windows, then go to http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/joemax6403/start.jpg ,then go to http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/joemax6403/control.jpg , then go to http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/joemax6403/security.jpg , then go tohttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/joemax6403/window.jpg , then go to http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/joemax6403/except.jpg at the tab...then make sure http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/joemax6403/sfo.jpg is checked tell us if all the advise we all gave worked or not...

Ok one more thing and thanx I can host now!!!!! thank you alot and by the way if you have dsl and if sfo not on your panel then go to add program and make sure the downloadable version of the gsme is there and put add the downloadable version of the game and your now off :D

06-11-2005, 08:56 PM
Ok, when i click on the exceptions tab, i didnt see "SFO" on the list. So i tried added the port myself. I called it "SFO", typed in the port # "1626" and put a check on "TCP". I still cant host... I also tryed "add new program" and browsed for the SFO folder i downloaded and still nothing. Is there something i 4got to do? ? ? Sorry to keep asking but id really like to know.

here is some help...This was quoted from a Moderator named SSJKarma ....I would do the underlined parts first...
KKS: sorry, but being behind a firewall do not necessarely means you cannot host ever ! same goes for router which are basically another computer with HEAVY FIREWALL !

it only means that unless you are a true computer expert and knows how to get into the router web configuration, you cannot change the firewall, otherwise you could simply free the port 1626 in the router's firewall and tell the router not to block that port if anything happens on it !

and it will let you do as you wish, which will also gve you the right to host games ! or join games !

in any case...
here is something that will let people be able to perhaps fix these problems in the future !
************** WARNING WARNING **************
DO NOT DO THESE UNLESS YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, IT CAN COST YOU YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION IF YOU ARE ON EITHER ADSL OR CABLE ! IT CAN ALSO SCREW UP YOUR FIREWALL AND LEAVE YOUR COMPUTER COMPLETELY VULNERABLE TO HACKERS ATTACKS !

USE EXTREME CAUTION WHILE DOING THESE STEPS !
************** WARNING WARNING **************

1- Find yourself the IP ADDRESS of your ROUTER (generally... 192.168.0.1)
This is also called the GATEWAY for those who are on INTRANETs (local network)
2- Start your favorite WEB BROWSER and type int he adress bar the IP adresse of the ROUTER.
If it is the right IP, then the ROUTER will answer the call and send you his CONFIGURATION WEB SITE
By now you should be able to see the ROUTER's name and it asking you to enter the ADMINISTRATION PASSWORD.
Why so, because yes, the router configuration site can be seen by those on internet as well.
Now the password i can't help you, see int hemanual that came with the router. it should be there if you didn't changed it !
3- If the password and LOGIN were right, you should nowbe taken right into the configuration menu of the router !
In there there is a lot of options for you to touch, why ? because as i said, the router is basically another compouter !
Search around the buttons and see if you can't find anything related to FIREWALL. there should be a few options for it to be configured, by default all router will blocks all PORTs except for the 80, 21 and a few others i can't remember, why these aren't blocked ? because they are used for HTTP usage, if the firewall were to block them, you wouldn't be allowed to even go over the net !

ok... this is all i can do for you... except perhaps suggest those who cannot host to try and host on the port 80 or 21 since no firewall well configurated do not blocks them, but know that this suggestion is only a 50/50 guess, it can work but there is no guarantee that it will work ! so be my guess and try changing the game's configuration port to 80 or 21 !

in any case, you don't have anything to lose in trying different port if its just the ingame port thing !

hope this has been helping some who can do something about it ! Also check the other info from the other post to Connection problems... (http://nferno666.sytes.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1400) other then that...i have no idea

I think i figured out why i cant host... I use a earthlink modem and I know not many people use earthlink so if i wanted to host that would mean only earthlink users can join, right? I typed in my ip address in the options screen, I changed my port # to 80, i tryed turning off my firewall, I try putting the port # into the exceptions tab and still nothing. I betting it is the earthlink modem. Hopefully i'll be changing to msn, then ill try again. Thx anyway people 4 trying to help me.
