View Full Version : Rock vs rap - Ye ole debate

Selvin
01-31-2003, 12:32 PM
Well, pretty simple, debate which genre of music is better; rock or rap and please state why. I'd hate to have to read a stupid post supporting rock doing it more damage than good.

Anyways, I say rock is better than rap for numerous reasons. The most obvious IMO is that rock isn't hollow. The majority of rap artists have no skill what-so-ever and use the video to get publicity. The video truly did kill the radio star. For example, I use Nelly: Air Force One, possibly the stupidest song I have heard... he talks about shoes!?! I'm I the only one her<s>r</s>e who notices this!?! Nelly would have never had become mainstream of he didn't have the "chicks" (I perfer the term "s**t") in the videos. Now don't get me wrong, rock bands have the chicks hang around them, BUT they rarely use them in videos are but them in bikinis. Another reason why I say rap blows is because of the lyrics, I use Ludacris' first single "Southern Hospitality" for example. He uses the lyrics:

All my women in the house if you chasin cash
And you got some big ***ties wit a matchin ***
Witcha fly-*** boots or ya open toes
When ya get on the flo' - ***** throw dem 'bows

Now, one of my sisters was signing this and me & my other sister were just watching her astonished because the song is degrading women. The majority of raps songs: degrade women, take about killing police, drugs, or living the life of a gangsta. Its total bull, if I wanted to hear this stuff, I'd commit a crime, go to jail and just listen to peoples stories.

Now rock on the other hand isn't hollow, but it does have some cracks. Anyways, rock is better than rap IMO because WYSIWYG. I'm watching "Never Again" by Nickelback and even though I hate them, it is a quality video. It is them playing their instruments, no chicks and it gets airplay for the music, not because of some women having champagne being poured over them.

Also, the lyrics have some quality. I look up the "Sweetness" by Jimmy Eat World and the lyrics are:

If you're listening.
Sing it back.
String from your tether unwinds.
Up and outward (but only) to bind.
I was spinning free with a little sweet and simple numbing me.
Are you listening?
Sing it back.

Lets see, it doesnt't: degrade women, take about killing police, drugs, or living the life of a gangsta.

Rock is better than rap in my opinion. :buttrock:

All my women in the house if you chasin cash

Witcha fly-*** boots or ya open toes
When ya get on the flo' - ***** throw dem 'bows
hum.........can't believe ya used one of Ludacris' songs man....... :angryfire: j/k

anyway, ya like rock better, I like rap better...... Rock is not for me .....I mean when u listen to rap, the beat is crazy, U can rap along easily, U can dance on it and $hit......yeah sure the lyrics are really crazy but in all kind of music (except pop and that other music $hit)

There is always explicit lyrics, degrading either woman, police, child and all that but there is always some artists that got good lyrics and all......... Nas is all about that.......Tupac too, except that he hates the police and all that but he tried to help us black people U know.........anyway.......for me Rap is the best

Personally, I think Rock is better than raP. Selvin already gave out almost all of the reasons why!

Just like he said..
Rock isn't about " Bling Bling, money, hoes... cars".
And they also use their OWN Instruments!
And they also aren't RACIST in songs.. Believe it or not, I find some Rap songs a bit racist to the Community. For examPle, that new Video by "Ja Rule"... It's SOOO stuPid, and it as "Black Panthers" in it!!

When was the last time you saw a Rock Video, with them saying "Whites are better?" or suPPorting KKK?

I mean I'm and Not Black OR White, so this is coming from No Racism! But it's just stuPid how they TRY to be better!

Oh and the LYRICS, aside from the hoes n $hit, they're make NO SENCE!!!
And the *NEW* Slang they all use..

"Get my Hair diddy"??

??? ok asshole I see nothing wrong with what ja-rule did and where u get blackpanthers from so what, he can do that. And what is this about kkk, they were for violence and threats
Blackpanthers standed for the rights that the blacks should have and freedom that the white man was taking from them. Its a black thing, now Selvin lol yeah i never thought about what luda said but hey its still a kick ass song. And the nelly talking about shoes lol u must not get it. Nelly trying to say they the hottest shoes in the joint. "give me two pairs I need two pairs so I" "get to stomping in my airforce one's" All he is doing is Advertising the shoes so he can make the green.
The new slang *get my hair diddy* :withstupid: never heard of it.
Now the reasoing I like rap cause its pretty much what luda said Lyrics, I could easily freestlye $hit on and u wouldnt make a comeback unless u spite back.
use the video to get publicity
I dont give a flying monkeys nuts about videos, and to me best videos would be rap everyday thing in. But some stuff in rock does disturb me  Anyways rock is ok I got my fav bands linkinpark,System of a down,N.E.R.Detc.. the whole "U cant be me Im a rockstar im ridding on top of a cop car." things like that are just kool.
Lets see, it doesnt't: degrade women, take about killing police, drugs, or living the life of a gangsta.
Come on don't even try to pull that sugarcoating bull one me! j/k. But its not like rockers dont have issues with drug's women, drinking.

yo i hear somethin like this everywhere i go. people say that rap is bad. people say that rock is bad. i like rap better than rock. i will tell you why.

rap has good beats to listen to. rap also has some tight as hell lyrics. and think about this. you always see a rap or an r&b artist number 1 on the charts. why u ask. cause it is popular.

im also so sick of people dising rap. a lot of people say that rap is a bad influence on people. hell, what about tv, what about rock, what about bad people, what about some websites and ##### up videos about stupid ####.

i hear a lot of people say this *it takes no skill to be a rap star* the hell with them. you try busting tight as hell lyrics that everybody can like. you try to find a tight beat that can make a song off the chain.

thats all i got to say now on this subject.

Well i dont feel like typing much so ill just try to get to the point...........

My preference is Rap.

Reason: Because i enjoy freestlying, I like to compose beats, i like to put stuff together and i think that Rap has come along way. Rap isnt just Money, hoes, Beenz and all that stuff. Rap is also the word of the people, rap wanst always what it is right now. Politics for once has been in Rap for a long time, i feel that i can relate to rap because i can get things across in no other way. Its poetry in motion, you must know alot of vocab and must read alot of books.

Why i dont like Rock as much as Rap: Well the reason i dont like rock is because i dont like snake tattoos, I dont know how to play an instrument, I dont like wearing black, I dont like body peircing and i dont do heroin.

Oh and i dont like doing this............. :buttrock:

Then no more of this racist bs... Frankly, I don't care what ethnic group invented rap, and I'm pretty sure Selvin was reffering to rap vs rock as it is NOW, and not rock vs. rap origins or anything like that...

Oh yeah, another point to add to the flamming of rap. My sis was watching Missy Elliot's newest video and a bunch of others on TV and I just gotta ask; is it cool to dance like you're having a seizure?? Really, I'm not joking, just seeing them dance, I thought they were have a syncronized (sp) seizure. I look at my sister and see her doing the same thing on the couch. Don't get me wrong, I could care less if they dance, but what they are doing now doesn't count as dancing IMO. It just looks like they're having a seizure.

okay if i had to honastly choose betwen rock or rap i would choose rap...
why? because although "you" may not understand some of the lyrics, some people do understand them.
its kinda like poetry, it has different effects on different people.
as for the seizure dancing? many artist dance differently, thats how the art of dance evolves i mean wouldnt you laugh if you were alive when they invented swing dancing? it just looks funny....anyway those rock guys dont dance any better all they do is throw there hair around and jump into mosh pits and such, for example a certain Andrew W.K.....
i do however compliment rock artist on there instumental skillz, cause i have been trying to learn to play guitar for almost 2 years and i have hardly improved at all.....

Selvin, its cause all your talking about is commercial Rap. You know, what you actually see on MTV or the Radio.

I remember when Rock was commercial, there was guys with long hair, chicks dancing around the band members, guys on face paint and rock stars doing heroin. Now that was how rock was when it " WAS POPULAR" and you would see people wearing what the rock stars were wearing.

Rap is just going through its commercial stage like every kind of music has been through.

All you know about rap is what you actually see on TV or Radio, you oviously dont know whats in the underground of stuff. Just like with rock, it got popular back in the days because of all the Long hair, Face paint, hot chicks, big concerts and total madness. Rock is over its commercial stage, it will one day rise through the music charts and become commercial again.

Then you going to make a topic that says "Why is Rock so stupid" because really the best talent is really hidden. Almost none of the bands that you have mentioned and stuff i dont even know? Its because you dont like commercial Rock, you like the underground stuff is dosent get much publicity.

One day rap will be over with its commercial stage and one day be as maybe rock is, faiding away.................But as in any music, it comes back and leaves just like that.

So dont hate rap, just cause you dont have a taste for what it actually is such as the history, where it come from, who you make it then you really cant say anything because its coming from ignorence. Its better to have an understandment of all kinds of music than just hating on all the music you havent even experienced.

And you cant say im a Rock hater because i know how to play the guitar, i like spanish rock. It might not be the same languege but its the same stuff just not in english. I like Jaguares, Molotov, Caradura, Enanitos Verdes, Brujeria, control machete and a buch of music. So im not ignorent to the music, is why i dont hate on rock because i actually know what it is about.

Rock Vs. Rap...........

I hate none of them, but i like rap better because of free expresion. I can play the guitar, but its never the same as always speaking out on what needs to be told. Tho i do love to play the guitar :buttrock:

Let's see...what is there to say...

I think just about everything has been covered.

I admire how rap artists speak so fast and manage to come up with those witty ryhmes, but I must agree with Selvin with the inappropriate phrases and seizure dancing. I found the seizure dancing comment pretty funny...by the way what happened to Missy Elliot--she get the fat sucked outta her?

Anyway to be a rapper one does have to have a lot of talent, but it's not singing. I prefer singing over talking when I listen to music, so I prefer rock over rap.

Not nessacarily (sp). Rock's popular days were around Nirvana and the Grunge moment. I didn't see chicks dancing up and down in grunge videos and grunge was the thing at the time.

Then you going to make a topic that says "Why is Rock so stupid" because really the best talent is really hidden. Almost none of the bands that you have mentioned and stuff i dont even know? Its because you dont like commercial Rock, you like the underground stuff is dosent get much publicity.

Uhh, how do I put this. I do like mainstream rock. Some of my favourite bands are on Top 40 radio.

"Rappers are rockers you've gone retarded"

I'm not sure if any of this has been said, b/c I'm not going to go through 5 pages of posts. Most of hit is more than likely just flamming anyway.

I never understood how rappers just drop their values, and become a rapper. There is no skill to it, but the skill to talk too fast, and use woman to catch the eye of the listener/viewer, b/c they know their lyrics won't.

What's up with those stupid ass platnium teeth? Do they think that looks cool? makes them look like trash.
Why are their clothes always hanging half way off their ass's? gay...just...gay.
Most of them just cover old songs from the 70s and 80s. It's not that hard to write your own lyrics.
du rags? bandana's? What's wrong with these ppl?

and the almighty question...."Where in the hell did they learn to talk???"

Real Rappers are poets that show there lifestlyes or feelings through words that have a rhyme to them.

Those guys you see KKS are just stupid ass posers.

Yes, a mouth full of metal...is some stupid S.H.I.T.

Ebonics, is a lazy way to talk unless you understand Ghetto talk you shouldn't comment.

Du Rags=Have a very good use KKS it helps produce styling hair for african americans. You know waves,or when someone has cornrolls......useless for cajuns to wear s it seems useless to you.

Bandanas=Symbolize gangs...that is the only use for them....and they match good with some clothes....

People become rappers because it's a dream to be famous......also some people drop out of school, and look at rap as there only chance for QUICK MAJOR success.

Rockers...Every rocker I've seen tell there lifestyles or story in a way that matches there tempo...must rockers I've seen carry a guitar....or maybe thats just something I've only seen.

Oh to make this interesting I'm joining the losing side..... ROCK...*dumdumDUM* :lookaround:

I know what will turn this debate around....

"GUNS AND ROSES".

I mean atleast the in Gun and Roses wore a KFC container over his head, and not pull up his pant leg.

PULLING UP ONE PANT LEG=This means another man owns you....so unless your a girl....all you rap lovers should stop with that...because it makes you look like your attracted to mean....this is fact.

Oh and tupac great points.

Well as i said, its just a trend right now. but later it will all be gone, and we are going to be old guys dressed all G'ed out while our children will be lisening to Futuristic music.

Then Old Selvin will make a topic "Rock Vs. Futuristic Music, Ye old debate". :)

I think most of you are judging due to ignorence. All that youve seen of rap is what you see in Main Stream. When rock was getting off people were all against Rock.

It all starts off in the 50's after the war and sub-burbs were just getting started in the east and were going strong to the west. Teenagers that were living in the sub-burbs felt bored after moving out of the city having nothing to do. Well there was this new craze sweeping the nation throw the radio named "Rock'N'Roll" and a new artist has pop his ugly face, "Elvis the Pelvis". Parents automaticly thought it was evil because of the way he moved his hips, looked, and signed. Even tho this started the wave of new music all over the nations for years to come.

The reason of this little leason is.............

There will aways be haters to music, rock or rap. Its nothing new that parents or that one bitch "tippy gore" will be against the new genaration of youth that comes out. Rap's genaration is right now, rocks was about 20 years ago.

If you understand where rap came from and what it actually means to the "Black community" you would understand more what Rap actually is. 100 years of diversity, racisum, political activists and slavery has made rap what it is today(not what you see on TV). Rap is a combination of Gospel, Blues, and poetry.

You guys see WAY TO MUCH TV!!!!!!!!!!! When i hear about Rock stars and there crazy stories of "Money, Groupies, Drugs, Backstage parties and lots of sex" thats all people see of rock to. Rap isnt the only ones that have a bad rep, rock also is in the problem but its just not as main stream no more.

TuPac, that was probably the best giving explanation in this whole Thread!

But there are some Mistakes you made...
I don't hate RaP because it is COMMERCIAL raP, I hate it because of the lyrics..

But then again, if you look at it from my View, I also hate a LOT tyPes of Rock..
I mean a LOT!!!

And I also DO like raP still(yes, iot's a big surPrise), so I'm not saying which is better cuz it's ONLY my oPinion, but I "ENJOY" Rock more!

Ludacris
Cash Money
Eminem
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.

Thats what the "bubble gum" affect takes place im main stream. The gum(or song) tastes good for a little while, but then it loses its flavor and you throw it way. Thats the kind of wack rap, but its popular because we are going through the Rap Era. One day this "Rap Era" will be gone and dead, but some how the true meaning of rap will always be around.

You can hate one rap, just keep in mind that it will never be around for a long time. I remember when "House Music" was around

That #### sucked as hell, everyone always liked to buy this one CD that eveyone had "house'o Holics" lol

Well, time for my two cents.

In my opinion, rap is...well...crap. No offense to any rap fans here, but I can't stand it. First off, for the most part, my 13-year-old brother can come up with better lyrics. They sit there and "rap" about the dumbest shiznit in every song. Next, for the most part you can't even tell what the hell they're saying. The last part is the most important one, by the way:

They don't make their own MUSIC. The background music is mostly synthesized, with drums. The beat is repetitive. I've analyzed a bunch of rap songs. Throughout the ENTIRE songs, it's the same beat over and over and over again. Many times it's a single pound of the bass drum over and over. It's so repetitive, it's boring. Rap makes me tired, in all seriousness. If I want to fall asleep, I'll listen to rap, because the boring repetitiveness just knocks me out.

Rock, on the other hand, is more alive. You can't beat the feeling you get when your favorite song comes on. Rock lyrics don't sound like they were made up spur-of-the-moment as they were recording the song. They don't talk about getting drunk and toking up blunts and fcuking bitches all day long. They have stories or themes or REAL messages behind them, and they're not what I just said above. Also, the sheer force of the electric guitar and bass wakes me up. It's heavy, it's electric, and it gets my adrenaline pumping. If I hear a good song from Andrew WK, Rammstein (especially Du Hast), Disturbed, or especially Metallica, i get pumped up. It's not the same repetitive underlying beat like rap, but it's a smorgesboard of guitar and bass and drums and sometimes keyboard. Let me use an example:

When I used to lift weights in high school, we'd get in there and someone would either throw on a rock CD, or turn to a good rock station. Once a few good rock songs would come on, everyone would be pumped up. For me, if I hear a good guitar riff, I'm good to go. I'm pumped up. My adrenaline is going. I find that I have more weightlifting endurance while listenint to some good rock. Then some white boy assclown wannabe wearing FUBU runs over and throws on a rap CD. The effects are almost immediate. Everyone slows down. Gets more sluggish. We tire out faster. The repetitive beat just knocks ppl out. Another example:

At my work (a truck unloader for a retail store), most of my co-workers like rap better than rock, including my supervisor. However, as of late, when we'd be getting bigger trucks filled with heavier shiznit, he'd tell me to throw on one of my rock CDs or rock mixes. It's because while listening to rap, most of the ppl back there will slow down to the point of flat-out laziness. What should take them 30 seconds instead takes them 2 minutes. Once the rock music turns on, the pace is increased dramatically. We're moving faster. We're working harder. I myself can work longer, harder, and faster than normally. Rock music gives me (and most other rock fans) a sort of energy that can't be described. I get more awake, more alert. A 200-pound marble table that would have given me trouble lifting is now being carried around with ease.

Then some ppl are like "oh, well you can't dance to rock. Rap is better for dancing." Screw dancing. Dancing is mad gay. This one wannabe who used to work back with us used to try to dance, saying he was like the best dancer in his school or some ########. What he said it took him a year to learn to do, I replicated it in about a minute with minimal mistakes. Personally, unless a guy is doing a slow dance with a hot chick or girlfriend (so he'd have a better chance of getting a little some-some), he shouldn't be dancing. As far as parties go, parties nowadays are gay. All they are is a ########load of posers who play rap all nite and get drunk and get leid. That's not a party. I don't know why ppl call them parties. They should be called orgies or drunkfests. Not parties. Very few ppl nowadays know how to throw a REAL party, with some rock music, food, and SOME beer/alcohol, with a pool table and/or a foozball table, and a FEW hot chicks. Overall there should be no more than like 10-15 ppl, instead of the 50+ person house crashers we've got nowadays.

Overall, considering lyrical content, and especially the beat of the music, rock wins, hands-down. I see NO argument.

PS: besides, rock came first. Without artists like the Rolling Stones, the Beetles, Otis Day and the Knights and Elvis Presley, there would be no rock music, no rap music, no techno, rave, disco, country, folk, ANYTHING. So I think we all owe something to rock music. Ya can't beat the father of all music.... :buttrock: :buttrock:

Well I do pretty much agree with Tupac except for the fact that I do hear some underground rap groups that are good. In a sense, that is my point. I've always liked mainstream and underground rock bands, but I seem to only like underground rap groups. 99% of the rap artists I've seen that are stars now have sold out in one way or another.

Nantuko dancing is not gay (but people who cant dance usually think so) :laughlong:

and yeah its true that most rap artist talk about drugs but so do rock groups.... like umm Weezer most of there song talk about dope...
and as for the song making no sense maybe you just didnt get them ??? .....(you try explaining clint eastwood) its a good song but i only like it cause a certain rap artist( Del the funky homosapian) made a cameo
and besides if rap is no good then why are lots of rock groups using rappers in there songs... linkin park, limp bizkit, gorrilaz, etc. even the song "Walk this way " was better with Run DMC.....
and rock wasnt first..... folk songs and church hymes trace back way before people started rock music.
and just so ya know , all rap groups are not negative.....cause i myself listen to groups like
Jarrasic 5, shorty groove, Del, Swollen members, De la soul....just ask i got a million of 'em

Look that is just u, u may get pumped up by rock and not rap
put it is not like that on everyone. I know tons of raps songs that get ppl crunked up. And that whole rock, and hearing a good guitar riff gives u a Boost in strength LOL whatever :laughlong:

Rock, on the other hand, is more alive. You can't beat the feeling you get when your favorite song comes on. Rock lyrics don't sound like they were made up spur-of-the-moment as they were recording the song. They don't talk about getting drunk and toking up blunts and fcuking bitches all day long. They have stories or themes or REAL messages behind them, and they're not what I just said above.

Ounce again we dont rap about drugs and hoe's 24/7. And whats this? U dont believe anyone in this forum can get a alive feeling out of rap? Rappers taek the time to sit and write things down.
Not true, almost every rock and rap song has drum beat over and over in a song. Rappers make own music lol, No need they can create sounds without guitars. I find the same instruments boring. So I like the fact how they just take a lil of this and that to make somthing new. And about drums go look at a black college marching show band nuff said.
for the most part you can't even tell what the hell they're saying. Know adays I see most rappers have slowed down in speed so i can hear the lyrics just fine. Now as for rock all the loud guitars I see why some of them have to scream in teh mike. Rappers have more control of thier music in vloume then rock.
Then some ppl are like "oh, well you can't dance to rock. Rap is better for dancing." Screw dancing. Dancing is mad gay.
.......U cant dance is what I take it. And if you or anyone else is in highschool and u go to a pep rally notice what kind of music they play. Special when the cheerleaders perfrom. Mostly rap not rock and most of the ppl in teh stands might know the lyircs and sing it out loud.

Ok, it's uneven now I'm going back to the rap side.

Look Tupacwestsider seems to be leading the Rap side of the debate, and hmm Selvin,KKS,and Asshole are runnint the rock side with followers.

Ok, lets give some good points to rap...

**ahem**

Rap can be mixed with any kind of music, and still would sound interesting to hip hop fans...

Here is an example of Rock and Rap together in a song=

Run DMC and Aero Smith(I forgot the name of the song)

That was one of Aero Smith's best sngs, and one of Run DMC's best songs.

Rock can't go with everything...paint a image of Reggae and Rock together.....ewww.

Rock might sound cool with Techno....hmmm

Reggae,and Rap sound so tight...Example=

Busta Ryhmes and Sean Paul=(Remix)Make it Clap
------------------------------------------------------------
When I'm playing games... And I have to listen to rap I only listen to two artist while playing fighting games...

M&M(I can't spell his name right but I have all his CD's....I'm the real shady...all you other slim shady's are just....lol)

Wu-Tang Clan=There music sounds like fighting music, and they have there own fighting game too.

------------------------------------------------------------
SAdily besides that I listen to mostly to Rock songs when Playing fighting video games
------------------------------------------------------------
No Driving games can go either way......I'll just say Rap for this one.

Well Nantuko, im guessing that you are a really stuburn person that just dont lisen to anyone elses opinions except yours. As ive said before, you lisen to what is on Main stream and automaticly think that all rap is like that. look what happend to curt cobaine(sorry if i spelt that wrong), Suicide. now what is the public going to think when they see that in the news?

When I used to lift weights in high school, we'd get in there and someone would either throw on a rock CD, or turn to a good rock station. You are right, Rock music does get you pumped there is no doubt about it. No wonder so many people can do stupid #### when there lisening to rock, no wonder so many people that lisen to rock comit suicide, no wonder so many rock stars do drugs, no wonder theres so much violence in the community.

Now i just said that Rock is the cause of so much trouble in the community, but is that really true? Well i know the people that lisen to rock will disagree with me. Now why cant you understand it but the other way around?

So far we got 2 people(asshole and selvin) to admit that not all rap is bad. I dont have to say "Rock is Crap" to get my points out, my logic has coverd that all :buttrock:

Oh and also Rap also has its strong points, Rock might get you pumped but Rap just makes alot of things better to. I would say its better to dance to, and i dont know if its a bad thing but i like to "Dance". Is that a bad thing? ladies love dancing and i love ladies dancing so we dance. Or with friends come over and have nothing to do, well bust a beat and lets free flow and try to beat each other. Look at Basketball, most basketball videos have Rap in it, now i know what your going to say "Well most people that play basketball are black and black people lisen to rap". that might be part of it but when you have something with rap its more free flowing, its like its dancing to a beat, its smooth and shows more tricks to it.

Now rock will show more of the dunks, power moves, hard ass drive in's and Crazy madness. but crazy madness dosent work with everything thats why rock is being replaced with alot of video things in sports. like......

basketball
football
skateboarding
snowboarding
and more stuff that i just dont want to type cause it will take time.

Psssst. Opera and classical came first than Rock and does that make it any better than rock? i dont know if you know but rock copied a bunch of music, you cant say "Rock is the Father of all music" thats just wrong. "Rap didnt come from Rock IN NO WAY!!!!" its a combinations for Gospel, Blues and poetry and was started in NYC.

Nantuko Joe, you need to really be more open minded about all types of Music. The reason why alot of White people (KKK) are still racist with black people because there closed minded about all kinds of races. You just have to give it a chance, but i know that there is that kind of people that are so stuborn that they will do anything to prove themselfs right with out giving it a chance for a while.

Rap, Rock, whats the difference? They make people happy dont they? The what is the big deal? There are Rap haters and there are Rock haters. Why be a hater?

Tupac accepts all kinds of music :buttrock:

Actually, I hadn't read a single post in this topic when I made that reply, so anything you said in the 6 pages before I made that post went unrecognized by me.

Second, I do NOT listen to what's "mainstream." I listen to underground ######## too, and pretty much, EVERY SINGLE rap song I've heard has the same exact qualities as the rest of them:
-Lyrics thrown together in 5 min (or so it seems)
-Repetitive underlaying "beat" (usually a bang on the bass and repeat that over and over)
-The "music" itself sounds like what comes out when you hit the "demo" button on an electric keyboard.

Finally, Kurt Cobain, in my opinion, was murdered, because there is substantial evidence that supports the theory that he was set up. However, IF he DID kill himself, it wasn't by free will. It was well-known that he WAS a heroin user, and heroin does all kinds of wacky ######## to yer brain.

And rap is being replaced in Basketball and Football because the majority of players in those sports....are african american. And I've never met an african american who didn't like rap. However, you're terribly wrong about skateboarding and snowboarding, Hell, I don't know if you could get FARTHER from the truth. Professional skateboarders and snowboarders listen to punk rock, because the skateboarding generation began with punk rock back in the '80s.

And where is evidence that "so many ppl who listen to rock commit suicide?" You think rock music is the reason for violence in the community? And that all rock stars do drugs? Take a look around at yer rap artists. I believe one of them was just arrested for possession of cocaine and marijuana. I believe that one of them was arrested for some shootings at a nightclub. I believe a few of them have been arrested at some point or another for drugs and harassment. And when was the last time there was an east coast/west coast rivalry with rockers, resulting in their deaths? What's that? Did you say "never?" That's what I thought. When I say "rock pumps me up," I'm in no way implying that rock music pumps me up to the point of wanting to do crazy ########. I'm saying that it WAKES me up, that the sound of electric guitar gives me energy, because it's a very powerful type of music. Rap is all done artificially, with beats that sound like keyboard demos.

I'm talking about '90s mainstream. Classical music and opera were restricted to theatres. Rock music began this mainstream thing: concerts, public appearances, and releasing of albums so the public wouldn't need to go see them live to hear their music. Rock started it all.

And you gotta be ########ting me. Rap a combination of blues and poetry? Poetry? That's just plain laughable. Hillarious, in fact. You're out of yer mind. While everyone else I've ever asked about rap said that it was a mix of a bit of disco, a bit of gospel (which both came about as a result of rock back in the day), and "tribal beats" as they put it (I guess they mean african tribal music), you're sitting here saying it's blues and poetry and gospel. Gospel? When the overwhelming majority of rap music is filled with messages about going to get high and get wasted and raping women and abusing women and going out to get leid, yer sitting here telling me that it's part gospel?

Nantuko Joe, you need to really be more open minded about all types of Music. The reason why alot of White people (KKK) are still racist with black people because there closed minded about all kinds of races. You just have to give it a chance, but i know that there is that kind of people that are so stuborn that they will do anything to prove themselfs right with out giving it a chance for a while.

And please don't make reckless exxagerations. "alot" of white ppl aren't KKK. Very few are nowadays. Furthermore, please NEVER AGAIN compare white ppl not liking rap with SOME white ppl who are racist. It's insulting to me. And I HAVE given rap a chance. When all these ppl back in like 8th grade/freshman year wanted me to listen to rap, I did. I TRIED to like it, I really did. But no matter how much I tried to like it and tried to open myself to it, i couldn't. I couldn't stand the boring repitiveness. I couldn't stand the nonsense lyrics. I HAVE given it a chance, unlike many anti-rap ppl. I've given it a chance, and still never liked it.

Nantuko, With your post you just explained to me alot of things.

I was talking about how people defend what they are most knowlegable about, and you did just that. When i dissed on Rock you came back and tryied to cover up for Rocks mistakes and then shot mistakes that Rap has. I expected you to post that, i could of even beted money that you were going to do that.

Now Kurt Cobaine comited suicide, just admit it.

Just as Tupac Shakur got shot and is dead.

Just because of problems in Rap you expect that the whole Rap industry is Bad Rap.

Just as i told you because kurt cobaine cominted suicide that he whole Rock industry is bad.

Ok it is settled, both Rock and Rap is equally bad in problems wise.

its equally good in Music wise. People lisen to both, and people like both.

This debate wont ever be solved because there is no way to see which is better, unless you see the music charts. and like i said in my earlier posts, Rap is having its Mainstream time pretty soon it will be gone and will be in more in the shadows like rock is hidding right now in the shadows.

However, IF he DID kill himself, it wasn't by free will. It was well-known that he WAS a heroin user, and heroin does all kinds of wacky ######## to yer brain.

Like that makes it any better

I'm not a boarder, so everything you said about PissedJaggers and whatnot is like me attempting to read greek. And just because ppl put rap in videos for skating doesn't mean that the skate community is becoming rap. Skate and punk rock go hand-in-hand.

Because fcuking stupid-ass parents THINK that rock music has hidden messages. They did the same thing back in the day. The parents thought that KISS was evil and the spawns of the devil. They thought that Elvis Presley was evil. And in the '80s, they seriously thought that Ozzy Osbourne seriously believed he was the anti-christ, and tried to ban his music. Whenever a tragedy happens, the fcuking idiot parents and/or government tries to blame it on something that is totally stupid. Rock music doesn't make ppl go shoot ppl. Playing Grand Theft Auto isn't gonna make ppl go out and trash cars and shoot people. Watching violent movies/television isn't gonna make ppl more violent. You're obviously believe what the media wants you to believe.

Sorry that the KKK thing offended you, i didnt mean to say it that way. I appoligize.

Apology accepted, you didn't know it would offend me. But I also expect white ppl to listen to rock, and black ppl to listen to rap. ONE of the reasons that I don't like rap is because (and I mean not to offend, if it offends you) I can't stand it when white people listen to rap and try to be black. You can't believe how much I can't stand it when I see some white kid decked out in FUBU walking around speaking in rap slang. That's one of the big reasons I can't stand rap. And if that offended you, I apologize ahead of time.

*cough*
Back to the Rock vs Rap thing
*cough*

yes, it is true that rapping does require skill. But it is also true that Rock requires a lot more skill.

Rap
-You mainly rap in one key
-There are only two or three instruments
-The bass plays the same friggin 4 chords the whole freak'n song

Rock
-True rock singers have an immense range(vocals). You never see a rapper like that
-The bassists actually play real/non-redundant tunes
-True guitarists play a lot more than jst power chordes and some play and sing at the same time. Wich is hard to do. I don't think I've ever seen a rapper that plays bass or turntabels or anything while rapping.
-True rock bands' songs are usually more deep . . .

Creed is a prime example of a true Rock band. Listen to their lyrics! MASTER-FREAK'N-PIECES!! The guitarist is amazing, and so is the bassist and drummer. Scott Stapp(singer) has an incredibally wide ranged voice; he doesn't limit himself to one key.

And is it just me, or is there no rap group that harmonises(sp)? Harmonizing is a true art of music, and so far, only (some) rock bands have obtained that art to it's full potential.

Oh, and one thing. Blink 182 is NOT Rock! They are punk-rock/alternative. Linkon Park is also not rock. They are pretty much Rapcore.

Again, it is true that rappers must have a wide vocabulary, but for the wrong reasons . . . kinda. They jsut use it to rhyme with other words, 'cause they can't find anything else. As rock bands use it for a more poetic and deeper sense.

i say that people should take the time to really listen to more rap instead of judging it all wrong.

and there is one more thing. rap has good dancers and good beats to dance to. i mean come on the crip walk is off the chain. i dont see anyone dancing to rock songs.

The main reason why you don't see people dancing in rock videos is because they don't care. At my school the majority of the school dances and unfortuantely I know how to crip walk (seeing so many people doing it has marked it in my head). Really, I don't see someone dancing that entertaining and I find it even less entertaining when it is that seizure thingy. Instead of dancing, they would prefer to:
A) Sing
B) Play their instruments
<s>C) Laugh at the people who dance</s>

Blood-Walk=The same as the crips they have there signature walk...not as famous as the crip walk because it's harder to do.(Try to moon-walk and do the crip- walk thats the blood walk)

Not nessacarily (sp). Rock's popular days were around Nirvana and the Grunge moment. I didn't see chicks dancing up and down in grunge videos and grunge was the thing at the time.
Im assuming you aren't counting the "cheerleaders" in Smells Like Teen Spirit. :D
I think Tupac was talking about the "hair bands" of the 80's.
Anyway,
I like rock better.

I play two instruments, and I just happen to think that rock is a better way of expressing myself. When I'm mad I listen to either metal or some sort of calming rock. When I'm happy I listen to punk, ska, or any good rock song with strong riffs. I like the older stuff too. I'm into all types of music, but what just irks me is some types of rap. Don't get me wrong, some rap is okay, but I cannot stand hearing about "ho's" and "dropping money on the bling" or what not. (skate919 is not very "up on it, yo") :D

Now, some rap is fine, because it expresses inner feelings, but the mainstream stuff is just crap-ola.

Selvin, you are doing a good job keeping this topic in line. Keep it up.

*P.S.*
It seems to me that the rock people back up their opinions more than the rap (excluding tupac and a couple others), I'd like to hear why the people who like rap more choose to.

I also like rock because there aren't as many one-hit-wonders in rock as there are in rap. In rap there seems to be people that come and go, and with the exception of a few, most of them seem to fade away after one or two singles.

I also dislike the fact that just because rappers might be successful, they think they can act, too. WTF is it with rappers in ########ty movies these days? Ja Rule? DMX? Eminem? None of them can act their ways out of a paper bag.

Also, there appears to be a lot more run-ins with the law with rappers than rockers. Rockers get in trouble for a little bit of drugs (we never hear about rockers getting busted for drugs nowadays) and trashing hotel rooms. Yet it seems like nowadays every rapper there is is getting busted for something. Juvenile (i think) a few weeks ago for possession of cocaine and marijuana. Puffy getting busted for some shootings. R. Kelly for fcuking a 14-year-old, possessing child porn, and possessing "indecent photos." Constant lawsuits and hearings about rappers beating women and shooting people and such. You NEVER hear about ######## like that from rockers. And when was the last time there was a west-coast/east-coast rivalry in rock music? Hell, when was the last time two rockers were killed by supporters of the other's band?

Also, playing instruments takes a WHOLE LOT more talant than hitting the "Demo" key on a keyboard and recording it, or hitting a drum four or five times and repeating it throughout the song.

Also, for some reason, rap is constantly redefining language in the US. What is "word up?" They can't say "what's up?" What is "peace out?" They can't say "later?" What is "phat yo?" They can't say "That's cool?" What is "bling bling?" They can't say "money?" What is "foshizzle my nizzle?" Why does Snoop Dogg talk like a fcuking moron with more "slang" than english? Why can't they use normal english instead of fcuking ebonics? I just don't understand.

There aren't as many nowadays in rock as there are in rap.

Also, people forget that Rock consists of many subcategories. There is hard rock, rock'n'roll, heavy metal, speed metal, "black" metal, "nu" metal, classic rock, alternative rock, modern rock, and I believe industrial is also considered rock. What is rap? With rap, it seems like they're just biting off of other songs like a million times. Plus, when their current albums/hits get old, most of the time they just make "remixes" of the current songs (like that J-Lo album), and I've heard like four versions of one song, but each version was "performed" by a different rapper.

First off, get my name right. it's "Nantuko", I don't know where you pulled "Natokoru" out of...

And not all rap/r&b songs are #1. There are a HELLUVA lot more Rock songs (rock, as in ALL subcategories of rock) making #1 than rap and r&b. Rap is recycled music at the best, with monotone, boring beats and lyrics so terrible that I think I'd rather listen to the sound of myself taking a ######## than listen to rap. Plus, making rap songs requires little to no talant whatsoever. Rock requires a lot more work, and a lot more talant. It's not the same, repetitive constant beat, but constantly CHANGING beats with guitar and drums. And guitar (bass too) is THE best instrument out there, it requires the most amount skill to play. How many songs consist of only guitar solos and vocals? A lot, because the guitar is the most powerful sounding instrument out there. Do you ever hear drum solos with vocals, and nothing else? No, because by itself, a drumset blows. But guitars are much different. I'd love to see a rapper pick up a guitar and play something, or even carry a tune for 5 seconds without making me want to rip my ears off.

I think the only two rappers I've heard that actually sit down, and think if lyrics, is Eminem and DMX.

Every other rapper I've heard sounds pretty much like this "yo what up b? I rape a ho, I bust a cap, I got mad bling bling yo fosho. ya'll can't be touchin mah $hit, I be to hot fo dat. I got platinum teeth I think dat make mah cool...but I actually have low self esstem(sp) and no values  "

Most of Eminem and DMX's songs are about their family, emotions, and problems a.k.a. a rock band.

I mean, look at some off these rappers.

Ludacris- "move btich, get out the way" WTF is that all about? How much talent does it take to come up with that?
Nelly- "It's getin hot in here, so take off all your clothes" wow....very very talented....pathetic..
Master P-"make'em say ugh" ugh!?!?!? ya gotta be kiddin me...
Jay Z-"Big pimpin, spendin cheese" He shouldn't be aloud to live after that one.
The list goes on and on...

What's up with them always walking around with their hand on their crotch? Is that the new, cool thing to do now a days? Fags...all of them...

Master P? More like Master P.U.! :D
The only time he "makes me say ugh" is when I'm about to barf at listening to his horrible lyrics. :p
(I like to make jokes too)

lol, anywho...
I think that Eminem and DMX are ok. They sing about real things, so I think they are better than all of the rest. I'm still not a big fan of rap, so I'd take SOAD over both of 'em anyday.

well like i said some people understand rap music some dont
but if i may ask can one of you please explain some of these rock songs

chop suey by system of a down
by the way by the red hot chilli peppers
never gonna stop me by rob zombie
and i can think of plenty more.....to me they make no sense whatsoever....
and i do agree that guitars rock but just because a rap artist doesnt play an instrument doesnt mean they cant..
its hard enough trying to make sure your words have rythem.
and if you dont think its hard you try to rap and play a guitar....
its much easier to sing or *scream* like so many other rock stars do while playing a guitar.....trust me i tried them all.

oh and i really cant explain the crouch situation...but i dont think its cool at all.

Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?

You're joking, right? I listened to the song ONCE, and I knew what they were saying.

You want to know songs where one can't figure out what the hell they're saying? Tell me that you immediately knew what the hell Outkast was sayin in "Bombs over Bagdad" (they talk faster than the guys at the end of car commercials) and Sean Paul's "Gimme the Light." (all I could understand was something about a massage, I think).

This makes no since and plus the name of the song, im always like were they get that from? What does it mean?

I believe they're talking about abuse in part of it, and how it's often hiden by people that don't want it to be noticed.

What about this, please explain this to me:

[quote]
In-slum-national, underground
Thunder pounds when I stomp the ground (Woo!)
Like a million elephants with silverback orangutans
You can't stop a train
Who want some? Don't come un-pre-pared
I'll be there, but when I leave there
Better be a household name
Weather man tellin' us it ain't gon' rain
So now we sittin' in a drop-top, soakin wet
In a silk suit, tryin' not to sweat
Hits somersaults without the net
But this'll be the year that we won't forget
One-Nine-Nine-Nine, and brutha anything goes, be whatchu wanna be
Long as you know consequences are given for livin - the fence is
too high to jump in jail
Too low to dig, I might just touch hell - HOT!
Get a life, now they gon' sell
Then I might catch you a spell, look at what came in the mail
A scale and some Arm and Hammer, so grow grid and some baby m

Well, after reading all of the posts from the first page again, I say this:

No genre is truly better than another because everything is open to opinion and personal interpretation. Certain styles of music are for certain types of people. I'd hope that would be expressed in this thread and it has. In this forum it seems as though that the it is pretty even in people who like rap and rock. Unfortunately, people who backed up why they liked their respective genre of music has one-sided...
