Special moves? - Who to do them?

I'm lost. I see the AI doing all of the special moves and such while I am sitting here doing the same thing over and over.

Just for u to know kien "LP MP HP LK MK HK" is
low punch = LP
medium punch = MP
high punch = HP
and same on kicks.
