EXPLANATION OF THE LAG
internet is made of multiple network !
ottawa, hong kong, alabama and all the country's are connected to that network by the SERVERS. when you type in an URL, that same URL is translate into an IP address, then this address is sent into the network to find what your looking for, THE WEB SITE. **then it is bringed back to you by the best path the packet (data sended over internet) can have...**
what i have put between the ** ** is what cause the lag !
example of a packet travelling from new york to new jersey (see how close those town are, only a river separate them both) the packet goes from new york to quebec to ottawa to hong kong to africa to groenland to some other country then gets back to the texas to finally comes to new jersey !
what caused the long path ? you ask...
simple answer, the packet has try to find a path that isn't blocked by other packet and since he has some TTL (Time To Live) he must find the fastest way around, but the thing is, the fastest way isn't necessarely the better one ! in most of the case the packet get in a loop (like this, ottawa to hong kong back to ottawa and get again to hong kong, you see the picture) and since his time ran out he just self destruct. then the computer in new jersey send a new message back to new york and say:"hey i never receive packet number 14 out 16, can you send it back ?" then the computer send the missing packet and the whole thing goes on again !
so in the nutshell, your modem does only one thing, that is not what count the most in that kind of game ! here is the explanation of the modem... the game sends about 3kb packet so even a 33,6 phone modem can send it in less than 1 second. now i know for sure that tmyapp tested the game on a 28,8 modem and he said it worked right too ! so the data is really less again so the fact that you have cable and or phone modem isn't what count in here since both send at the same rate ! (for cable modem to make a difference the packet must be 4096 or larger, thats about 4kb)
other things that come into play is those who are on phone lines, not modem but the phone line itself. if it is old then it put some interferences in the lines so the user lose speed and same goes to cable modem user except that they have more recent lines so they have less interferences ! that explain why some user have 56k modem but they don't connect to more than 33,6... my case exactly !
i know this is long, but to understand lag you must understand INTERNET and your MODEMs !

just setup a small little network in ur home and u wont have as much lag anymore and u wont need to have a high speed modem or connection. its way better than those.

i really think this topic should be saty at the top of the ###### help just to clear up the mind of the ######s about lag !
i will just add this to my explanation...
this is the how the game is set-up...
PlayerA <----> Server <----> PlayerB
basically the process i have developped in the first post has to work his way twice !
that is why it takes so long before the health goes down !
Aight.. I'll bulliten it ('cause so many people bitch about it without understanding how it works).
Another good topic that explains lag (page 3-6) (http://nferno666.sytes.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=5739).
Another good place to find out how lag opperates (http://www.vgmfusion.com/senshuk/home/articles/2warticle1.html).

troy88's definition of lag doesn't even help understand how the lag is created. he just tell the other the difference between true lag and bugs !
your definition of lag help a little but is sure not complete !
my definition explain how lag is created "ON INTERNET" i think we should get along and put some topic that REALLY explain it all.
- difference between lag and bugs
- how LAG is created on INTERNET
- how the machine itself can cause lag
putting those 3 things together would really explain what lag is. cause we all know that there is no SIMPLE explanation of lag !
troy88's definition of lag doesn't even help understand how the lag is created. he just tell the other the difference between true lag and bugs !

Whoa, whoa! Slow down and think about why I/we did those.
We weren't trying to explain how lag is created on the internet, that wouldn't explain anything to the young minds we get every day (if you preffer to think they have brains that is). Those simply state how/what lag is within the game. No more, no less.
You can preach about internet induced lag all you want to.. but it's pretty much the same thing as what happens in the game. What I want is for people to understand what's happening in the game...
And those both explain what's going on in the game plenty well. We could both delve much further, but then how many ######s would follow it? Practially none.
Completion is not what either of us were aiming for, just a "better understanding" of lag.
But if you are looking for a complete guid to lag... well I suggest you create a topic about it in the "comments and strategies" (since many more people will see it there).

you're right, but it was destined for the ######s but still i'll make the statement real clear and it will be posted in general comment and strategies

Can anybody find my 1-page explanation of how lag works that I made almost a quarter of a year ago? I can't, and I certainly remember being called by TMyApp, "Mr. Lag," or something to that effect.
Dan: I've spent hours (more then 2) looking for your post just now.. and I can't find it...
Do a search on "lag" and one on "mr" and see if any topic names sound familiar... other then that.. I wouldn't know.
BTW, did you ever make this?? (http://nferno666.sytes.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=4493)

well, mr.technical(SSJKarma) person. look, your explanation of lag is a bit complex for the average player and ppl who have not reached your level of intelligence might not understand it. I believe you should post two explanations of lag. one that is clear and straight to the point(easier for younger ppl to understand). the other, a more complex explanation for ppl who understand what the internet is or ppl who are interested in how lag really works.

I'm just sick of seeing people reviving topics that have been dead for 6 months, 12 months, and for the love of god (some people) reviving topics that have been dead for 1 1/2 years!
Well, that's it... from now on, there will be no more reviving these old-arse topics. ie: anything that's been dead for a month can be declared "dead", and is not to be revived under any circumstances.
If you want to quote/say something about old topics... quote them, link to them... just don't revive them. That's just asking to be banned...
<font color="blue">Take special note of the rule I just quoted...</color>
